I remember this story and it's far easier to follow along by reading it than by hearing it. Example: in the very first sentence:

"If you want My Space or American-On Line web pages," Dmitri confidently told the Wall Street executive before taking another long drag on his cigarette, “then hire New York programmer to build.”

There are way too many words between in the middle of the dialogue to follow along when it's being spoken.

I'm in the "might as well just read" it camp. I often listen to audio discussions while doing other things, but this reading was such that I didn't really catch a whole lot of the conversation. I was too easily distracted by my email and a couple of financial articles that I was reading.

If I hadn't already read the article, I wouldn't have known what it was about. The delivery lacked the wit or cheekiness that I heard in my head when reading the article the first time. That tone of voice in the audio blog was better suited to the corporate videos they force us to watch here (which I don't pay much attention to either).

I did, however, hear the pro pie etary without really having to listen for it. It sort of pops out as "whoa, what did he just say?" in a very painful kind of way.

I've listened to about two or three articles now and I must say I really like it. The article didn't really come across though because the voice is so terribly hot lol. Which is not a bad thing, mind you.

Good narration has a hint of accent
Good narration does not involve accents. They are just a way to make the listener feel superior. No wonder why Americans always do that.

I am waiting for the 3-D holographic version so I can fully impress my superiors with my dedication to keeping up with trends in IT.

Those of us who are visually oriented (a clear majority of tech people) have absolutely no use for podcasts etc. Kill this idea please, it's an abomination.
    • 1 million.

Seriously, that narrator was painfully bad. Good narration has a hint of accent, no more, not an over the top generic "USA" accent.

Now, if you could get an actual Cylon voice, then I might change my mind...

Does the narrated version existing really upset people all that much?
As long as the written version is still available, I couldn't give a rat's arse about what is available for the monkeys!! Personally, I wouldn't listen to it, but so long as the narrated version existing doesn't affect my reading TDWTF, I really don't understand the HooHa....

Saying the same thing twice doesn't make your opinions weigh more.

To answer to your question, it upsets people when things are done badly. It also upsets people if things are done badly when they are not needed at all. The narrated version probably is supposed introduce new people and doing it badly just hurts that goal.

But then again, you obviously didn't read the comments you quoted, so I don't see why you would read this answer either.

You're all a bunch of tards. Why complain "it's not as good" when it's an addition to the main site, not a replacement? Don't like it, great, don't use it. It's clearly not intended for the majority of people. But those who travel by car or like to listen to stuff WHILE working, not read INSTEAD of working, might find it useful.

  • (cs)

This site suffered enough when you expanded your focus to people that can't program and now you're going after people that can't even read?

Just go ahead and start posting sports bloopers and cat fail pics, you know you want to.

I love it! I've been listening to Hearablog for months on my Ipod on the bus, on the train, while driving etc.

And not just TDWTF, but also CodingHorror and JoelOnSoftware and some E-learning stuff.

Why are people outraged? I also prefer reading it myself, but unfortunately, my job does not allow me to read it all.

And sometimes, I can hear which articles are going to have good/funny/insane comments, and I check those out online. (After all, I came for the WTF's, but stay for the comments.)

No of course it's not upsetting. But if it's on here, with a "Comment" function, people will comment on it.

What maybe would work, and that's only a maybe, would be a dramatised audio show of the WTF. You know, background sounds, drinks glasses clinking, the sound of someone taking a long drag of a cigarette and exhaling, etc, instead of a bloody verbatim word-by-word slogfest. An actual dialogue between characters instead of "he said". *yes I know this one has no dialogue in the text but it exists in the dramatic sense because Dmitri isn't talking to himself)

  • Mike (unregistered)

So will they be reading the typos and grammatical errors literally?

  • anononono (unregistered)

The idea of narrating stories is maybe-ok; but I would be more impressed and amused if they narrated comments as well.
