The Empty Case thing is not a WTF. If you've ever used a Redbox, then you'll know that the DVD's you rent from it come inside cases. You can't return them into the machine without the case, so the machines also sell Empty DVD Cases for $1.

Or you can just buy empty DVD cases for yourself, if you want them for some reason.

Redbox is actually pretty neat. Renting a movie from a Redbox is $1 a day, no late fees. After 25 days, you essentially have bought the movie, so you can simply keep it and not be charged any further.

    switch (0) { }

    Winner!

I actually went to click on it and was disappointed.

I clicked on it and wasn't disappointed.
    I didn't click and wasn't disapointed.
I didn't click and was disappointed. (And then I clicked to get a bit of relief from my disappointment).
I didn't click and was disappointed. Then I clicked and I became even more disappointed.

I'm not startled by a WTF in computer code. Being so complex yet easy to change makes for a low barrier and high attempt frequency for that reaction. But how does "View Larger Sample" get printed on real objects from a successful manufacturer?

My guess is that these wood samples stand in a display where only the top three inches of each panel are exposed. The note makes it clear that you can pull the sample out to see more of the surface and the hole is for gripping (rather than hanging).

Come on -- you guys really don't get it? Nobody has ever shopped for a new counter top? The samples pictured are like 2"x3". Behind the desk, in a binder, they also have samples that are like 8"x10" so you can get a better idea of the pattern and color. The small samples are for browsing, the large samples are for decision making.

I'll admit that it is funny when taken out of context, especially with the wooden table meme we have going around here, so it's a worthy faux WTF, but don't try to analyze it and turn it into something it's not.

BTW, those Formica samples have looked almost exactly the same since before the wide-spread use of the internet.

That was kind of my point. I haven't seen these samples before because I'm a renter, not a homeowner. So on first sight I interpret them in a modern context in which they seem strange.

I watched an old episode (1960ish) of The Twilight Zone in which a mob was talking about something weird with money in their town. A woman says "I'm going to go get online at the bank!". My reaction was "WTF? A 1960's TV show predicted online banking?" A friend had to explain to me that "online" was a regional synonym for "in line", meaning she was in fact getting information the old fashioned way and anticipated a queue.

As someone that had been charged by Blockbuster (multiple times, but never again), I can attest that the charges are outrageous and that they don't refund the money even if it determined that it was their own fault.

We have returned movies and been charged their fee. When we went into the store to dispute it, they looked in a cabinet and said "Oh here it is! I guess we forgot to check it in. Since you've already paid for it, here you go!"

We use Redbox and Netflix now. (Redbox is nice that you can rent movies from one and return them to another. Very useful for traveling.)

I'm with Mr. TheHomeDepot on this one, I know a guy who found a nice Formica he licked and order enough for the whole counter ($40-$50 worth) only to discover that the pattern consisted of ugly clashing color splotches just large enough that the sample chip could fit inside one them.

That USB one is not very interesting - the Mios run Windows CE, and the default strings for the USB devices say that. The manufacturer is supposed to change idVendor (16-bit value) to their USB Vendor ID, and idProduct (again, 16 bit value) to the product ID code.

When Windows identifies devices, it retrieves the USB string before it hunts for a driver (and replaces the displayed USB string with the one in the INF file).

The problem is, Mio forgot to customise their Windows CE BSP to remove that text. They probably also forgot to change idVendor and are using the default Microsoft one...

Yes, the DVDs are $1 a night, and are considered yours to keep after 30 days. So, late fees are substantial if you don't have a way to return the disc. Congrats, you lose the case, you're stuck with a $30 previously viewed movie - even if it was unplayable. That's why there's an empty case or two in every RedBox kiosk.

The empty case is there if you lose the case to a movie - you still need a case to return it, so you just purchase one for a dollar.

Actualy, The view larger sample is there because the pattern is to small to fit on the little color swatches. You may not like it once you get a 1 foot piece.
