There is no conflict between UK and EU. the conflict is completely within the UK. There is a leave deal. take it or leave it.

TRWTF is of course the use of invades instead of invaded in VIKINGS_INVADES_ENGLAND

  • (nodebb)

Who thought it was a good idea to vote for Brexit, then elect an anti Brexit prime minister? It's like voting for tax cuts then asking Vladimir Lenin to implement them.

  • bvs23bkv33 (unregistered) in reply to Mr. TA

    except Lenin implemented fair taxes

  • Hasseman (unregistered)

The developer at least attended (and remembered) the historical lessons

  • Frist not Frist (unregistered)

In the UK we would write that comment as "It is usually followed". Not "It usually is followed" which is how someone from the US would write it.

  • Dude (unregistered)

TRWTF is using a float value for a year. I'm assuming said invasion didn't occur on Jan 1, which is what the value is trying to imply.

  • Barbarian (unregistered) in reply to Frist not Frist

Don't you have a Brexit deal to scupper?

  • Pietro (unregistered)

    Blood "fueds"?

  • Simon Clarkstone (unregistered)

In case people hadn't noticed, hex 3F1 == decimal 1009, which is what the "3F1"s are about.

Doesn't explain why it was dividing by 1009 though.

  • Cnut the Pretty Good (unregistered)

    They're not invading. They're immigrating.

There was even a song about it.

  • Little Bobby Tables (unregistered)

So TRWTF is not being able to spell "feuds", amirite?

Reminder for the historically challenged: "viking" basically, loosely speaking, means "holidaymaker". See? They came over here, drank our beer, shagged our women and trashed the place. So we learned to overcharge them and put them up in fleapits.

  • Dave (unregistered) in reply to Mr. TA

I like the way the Brexit negotiations are so strongly reminiscent of what it was like trying to get a plumber before all the Polish guys came over here.

At the end the day, the politicians have all had a two year holiday from having to answer questions about actually running the country. No surprise they're spinning it out longer.

Down with the vikings! All hail the emacskings and their ſuper metachords of power! :shakes eight-fingered fist:

In the UK we would *usually* write that comment as "It is usually followed". Not "It usually is followed" which is how someone from the US *usually* would write it.

Who thought it was a good idea to put an orange buffoon in the white house? It seems like there is a bunch of pricks who are playing 'chicken' with the world and they have been called out. I think one of the points of the article is don't take a political dump in the source, maybe that goes for comments on a programming website. In which case I am guilty.

  • Little Bobby Tables (unregistered) in reply to Mr. TA

More to the point, who thought it was a good idea to put the UK's membership of the EU to a referendum in the first place? About as sensible as giving children the vote as to whether to abolish school.

  • Kurbein (unregistered) in reply to Hasseman

    Not quite....

Vikings didn't INVADE England in 1009, rather RAIDED it.

The-Real-Viking-Invasion happened in 1066 when Normans (of Viking ancestry) conquered it, putting an end to the Anglo-Saxon domination.

The irony is an Englishman having "ancient grudges" with vikings, considering that those vikings (by way of French-speaking Normans) brought the words "ancient" and "grudge" (of Latin origin) to English language.

  • airdrik (unregistered)

Also noteworthy is how last year marked the 1009th anniversary of the 1009 Viking raids.

  • Æthelred the Unregistered (unregistered) in reply to Kurbein

What? They were definitely invasions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweyn_Forkbeard#Invasions_of_England

It literally ended in the Danelaw: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danelaw

In fact William the Conqueror only won because Harold's army had only just defeated the Norwegians at Stamford Bridge, and had to exhaustedly traipse back across England to fight the Normans straight after: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stamford_Bridge

These were absolutely invasions. They were contesting the throne, not looting churches.

  • (nodebb) in reply to Kurbein

Weren't the Vikings already pretty well-bedded into England by 1009 anyway? The Danelaw and all that?

  • Erik (unregistered) in reply to Simon Clarkstone

1009 is the smallest prime larger than 1000; if that helps.

Det virkelige HF er at denne artikkelen er ikke skrevet på gammel norrøn!

PS: I would like to apologize to anyone more proficient in Norwegian than I am. What I was trying to say is "The real WTF [tried to translate that acronym to Norwegian as well as "hva faen", which of course is the real TRWTF] is that this article isn't written in Old Norse". And wouldn't you believe it, I couldn't find any good translation for "old norse", the dictionary entry for "norrøn" says this word applies "to the old West Nordic culture in Norway and Iceland in the Middle Ages", not necesserarily to the language.
