There's a really real long standing wtf at the heart of this one. It's called bufferbloat. Cheap switch and router RAM leads to too much RAM, which leads to long latencies, which leads to TCP timeouts, which leads to exponential backoff.

How very sad. I can log in, but when I try to post it tells me to log in. So I log in, and I try to post, and it tells me to log in.

I'm sane, so I stopped there and posted as a guest. Well, apart from the fact that Google can't contact reCAPTCHA when I tick the box to say I'm not a robot.

System's got more bugs than a bait store.

    WTF The COMMENTS?

  • (nodebb) in reply to Quite

Steve_The_Cynic, it says "nodebb" next to your name, which tells me you posted as if you were logged in. Also, the reply button to the right of each comment does nothing?

Addendum 2016-03-21 08:46: OK, the reply button does do something, I just didn't notice anything.

How is this a WTF. Guy finds a fault in a newly deployed solution and fixes it.

TRWTF of course is that they redesigned their server Infrastructure first without having adequate backups.

They're working at it. (Unless they aren't.) I get a 500 - Internal Server Error when I try to log in. And what.thedailywtf.com tells me 502 - Bad Gateway.

Not anymore (at least with scripts disabled for google-analytics.com). At least Nothing to See Here. Move on.

Bug request: When clicking on the date and time on the right the nav bar at the top should overlay the beginning of that post.

  • (nodebb) in reply to PWolff

Funny how the reply button ends up inside the post's area.

"Decimate" - to reduce by one tenth. So not too much of a performance degradation, then.

  • Carl Witthoft (google)

TRWTF is logging on to look, at night! Remember the Rules of The House of God: "If you don't take a temperature, you can't spike a fever." This particular problem can be just as easily solved at 9 AM on Monday.

PS I can't log in either

  • Carl Witthoft (google) in reply to Romanus

To Romanus: the literal definition of "decimate" died decades ago. No point fighting that one any more.

Hey, look: it logged me in but still requires me to write in a "Guest name"

  • (nodebb) in reply to NedFodder

I log in, there's no sign on the page that I'm logged in, and there's a button that says "Log in" with "or post as a guest" under it. To me, that means I'm not logged in. So I logged in, it accepted my credentials, and then asked me to log in. It's broken.

  • Joseph Osako (google) in reply to Carl Witthoft

I had a different problem, in that I got an error saying

    Illegal arguments: string, object

To me, this sounds like some function somewhere is converting one of the strings (probably the pwd) to some compound object type, then passing it to a function or method that vetts its arguments.

As for NodeBB being buggy, well, yes, but at least they are fixing the bugs rather than dismissing them as the ravings of hidebound idiots.

  • Joseph Osako (google)

I just tried using the OAuth2.0 login feature (using Google specifically) and got bounced back to the min page, without getting logged in at all.

Oh, I expect others have said this, too, but does anyone else think that the article pictures of Masciej and Patrick make them look like they are cosplaying as Serversu SnapSeverus Snape and Eddie The Experiment, respectively? Well, Patrick would need the scar on his forehead (and Meatloaf's leather jacket, but we can't see that in this shot), but srsly.

  • Joseph Osako (google)

Gah, I forgot to mention that I meant Snape as he was described in the books; the fact that he was clean-shaven was one of the few faults in Rickman's performance, and not a big one, but the hardcore fans still noticed.

As for Eddie, I dunno, he's never given a last name in the play or the film... I'd say von Scott, but I'm pretty sure it was Dr. Scott's sister who they were related through given what was in the song "Eddie". Whatever...

  • thosrtanner (unregistered)

I tried to log in and it said 'illegal arguments - string, object' Also I hate those 'select 3 pictures which are xxxx' - iot's very definitely '3 things which are xxx in the mind of the person who decided they were xxx-s'

What happened to the tag cloud attack?

  • jgh (unregistered)

Sounds like my broadband router. Every few days it just dies and I have to go down into the basement to power-cycle it.

  • Ron Fox (google) in reply to Steve_The_Cynic

Ah but you are a robot. :-P

  • (nodebb) in reply to Guessed (with cheap RAM) (unbuffered)

The tag cloud has melted away, only to be replaced with the tag clown.

  • Hannes (unregistered)

The WTF is running something for the very first time and then going home a few minutes after starting the process, thinking "everything will be fine".

The RWTF is the reCaptcha-Checkbox not working properly under old Opera (12.18, that is). Having to change to Chropera just to comment here is a pain in the ass.

TL/DR;Admin installs system. System has bugs. Admin applies updates. And they all lived happily ever after.

  • gman (unregistered) in reply to Oliver Jones

@OliverJones funny you say that, I just learned about codel today during an upgrade and deployed it to a whole test network with outstandig results so far.
