    Ah, the classic "for-case" antipattern

    But it isn't for-case. It's a state machine (nMk is the state control variable) driven by a for() through the array (?) resVmrk.

    "True" for-case requires using the for-variable as the switching condition.

    Yes, ugly code. But as a scientist and researcher, I strongly disagree that we "love " it. It's used widely for two reasons: 1) "Every other company uses it so we have to use it too" and occasionally 2) because MathWorks sells pretty high-quality libraries for specific industries. I'll stick with R , at least until I learn Julia better.

    In... Matlab? Don't they know about Excel?

    Matlab is great at what it's designed for. But like many things, it's flexible enough that it finds itself well and truly in "I know this tool, and it technically can do this, therefore this is the right tool for me to use" territory.
