    I used a differential system so updates didn't need silly bandwidth. Good compression helps as well. If you don't mind waiting then it's fine to have one instance just rate limit instead. Often though we really just wanted everything to all be up to date and synced as possible fast.

    ISP vendors often use multi-cast but hardly anyone else does because it's not like they can just set that up themselves so easily as the ISP can.

    The modern alternative to multicast updates is to use some kind of torrent protocol. It's not half as efficient, but it's not your bandwidth that's being wasted so... who cares?

    There was a time when I would find this unbelivable. But after some 8 years of job experience I can safely say that this kind of behavior Bob displays is far too common...
