They weren't always. It used to be that every so often there would be a writer that tried too hard. Now it seems like most of them are. We now have a Citizen Cane DWTF. Jesus fuck, the next one will be Genesis or War and Peace.
I wish they would stop it with the overdramatizing. Just tell the story. Let the WTF stand on its own merit. Does it always have to have a love triangle or Cthulu behind it?

I don't think defragmenting is obsolete, but remembering to do it may be. With my last laptop I learned I was meant to do that every so often (this back when I was not remotely an IT person .. I was a late bloomer), and googled up some instructions thinking I was gonna really improve things (it was three years old, heavily used, and starting to show its age) - and found it had been doing it all of its own accord every week since I'd had it, bless its little cotton socks.

a fair few of which now a days detect that you'r doing a defragment and just shuffle the order of the blocks how you ask it to rather than writing them fresh it's actually really cool all the tricks they do in firmware to make the drive last as long as absolutely possible.

Sorry, my content has been officially deemed "too hot for the front page" by the powers that be. I can provide glorious content that satisfies everyone so thoroughly that they lay in a sticky, breathless heap for several minutes after they are done, but not on the front page, only in Discourse.
I think the decision is a calculated one, to ensure that there is plenty of top quality content around Discourse to detract from Discourse

While I can look at the hard drive light on a computer to diagnose this problem, this gives me a tool to see if the computer is having this problem when remoted in from another location. One problem solved today! :)

Oh I understand the numbers, thanks. Just wasn't aware of the utility itself. I've used Russinovich's x86 Process Explorer until now for in-house computers, but when troubleshooting a field computer, I'm not always able to download it. (Can you tell I've been lost in the halls of Windows XP for too long?) At least the built-in utility gives me some usable visibility almost immediately.
