I would have started looking for a new job after the desktop rant, not wait for mop-duty.

The other question that really stuck out in his mind was the standard, "Have you ever had to deal with a difficult personality in the workplace? How did you deal with it?"

Ah yes, been there, done that. I have been asked that question, and I asked it myself later on. Concerning the same person: the "lead" "developer".

Not wasting time but doing menial chores? That's ... odd.

when the "lead" in "lead developer" is tetraethyl

Holy cow! I wonder how the whole dev department hasn't quit already, making sure they mention who caused them to resign. Unless the boss is a complete ass, he would immediately fire Frank and rehire the devs.

Jesus Christ! And I am old enough to be among those that do in fact NOT invoke his name lightly.

This level of disrespect toward skilled employees is something no person with any self respect should ever put up with. I would have to be truly desperate, and by that mean literally starving and unemployable before I would allow my self to put up with working in an office with someone like that.

I am always baffled why people do it. Like, I get wanting to eat. But if my choice was between a job like this or flipping burgers for half the money I'd go flip burgers.

And the saddest part is that people don't just tolerate it but become so browbeaten that they accept it as normal. I would rather starve.

My wife worked in a place like that once. Her team had probably the highest turnover rate in the company (including at least one death, or maybe a serious heart attack, I don't remember exactly). But the manager was best buds with the department head, so of course she was in no way responsible for the poor performance of the team... :eyeroll:
