Martin's not the frist programmer we've seen of startling brillance...

Ah the classic "All this computer shit is easy so one person can do it, because IT guys just sit around all day anyway" business.

As long as the actual volume of work is achievable within the hours available, there's no reason the right person couldn't handle that range of tasks

All the server management and setting up network stuff - that's fine. I would be concerned with having to support the application which he had no involvement in writing, and more importantly, with a custom un-proven database. I also don't like that there are over a hundred competitors with nothing out of the ordinary to set them apart.

    Ummmm ...

Move the servers across the continent with no down-time? I think you need Montgomery Scott for that task.

Actually I do all that - but then they are my servers at home and I know exactly what's running on them since I built and configured them all.

I certainly wouldn't want to do all that on two sets of unknown hardware loaded with unknown software written by someone who doesn't have a clue, with clueless users attempting to break them all the time.

It's not like they wanted to fill 15 positions that were the equivalent of 40-hour weeks. They wanted someone with a lot of ability. If the pay was commensurate, then maybe he was just under-qualified. One of the best jobs I had was sort of like this one - I didn't spend all day doing just one thing, and at the end of the week I could look back and say that I interacted with more people within the (startup) company than anyone else except the CEO. I liked that kind of influence. Maybe this guy didn't want that.

I suppose I haven't had an interview like this because I stopped responding to laundry-list job reqs.

It's possible with redundant servers and load balancing, but "possible" and "likely" are two very different things here.

Honestly I feel you are underestimating this. This sort of job description sounds to me like an one way ticket to unlimited overtime. Even if all those systems are working perfectly and don't need to be constantly babysat (fat chance of that with home grown DB software) the sheer amount of hats he would need to wear makes it more than likely that there would always be someone bugging him for something outside of work hours.

And while I know some people love your overtime and 60h weeks but most of us don't.

I'm actually more interested what type of holiday there was in the US :-)
