Clearly the person who designed the web page had been sampling the vodka when doing the algorithm for getting an overall rating

Doesn't that mean they won't ship to the UK embassy in Haiti, but would ship to the embassy in (for instance) Canada?

Undefined is the best movie ever, I give it Nan stars!

Had the problem with the Twitch password as well. Problem was that what my password manager generated had non-ASCII characters such as German umlauts. After replacing them with different special characters, it worked.

Given the convention that embassies and consulates constitute part of their home country, you could say there are bits of the UK (and lots of other countries) all over the world.

  • (nodebb)

Beyond the "special" quality of their maths, why would anyome buy a vodka from a "Drink Sand Co(mpany)"? I won't like such extra dry drinks.

  • (nodebb)

I kinda interpret the eBay one as "We will definitely ship within the UK, we may ship elsewhere if you ask beforehand and pay all costs, but we definitely won't ship to <listed countries>."

  • (nodebb)

The vodka review looks remarkably like advertising copy for Vladivar vodka. I would suspect it's either an advert that is disguised as a review, or a review by a Vladivar shill that has been excluded from the ratings.

We here at TDWTF are wondering what they'd make of a phone number like 011232110330.

Most likely it would be silently converted to (214) 748-3647.

  • ooOOooGa (unregistered)

Though I suppose with that leading zero, it may get converted to (124) 836-6808 instead.

Phone numbers are hard. Microsoft has a similar problem w/ their AzureMFA config. You can view a user's current setting/phone number, and it will be displayed as +# ###-###-#### (or whatever appropriate for the country, bottom line it has the plus and dashes included/displayed). If you try to just update the number and leave the plus/dashes in, it will error out and tell you it only accepts the format as ########### (string of numbers w/out special char).

The "excludes" country list would appear to be a hint for the input right below it, where you have the option to change the ship-to country.

  • (nodebb)

Bolivia? Isn't that just south of Cheltenham? Or am I thinking about Peru?

  • Technically.... (unregistered) in reply to jkshapiro

Since Fridays have a pedantic theme, I have to point out that technically the building and site for an embassy are called the chancery.

  • Barf4Eva (unregistered)

As long as there is a guarantee that the country code is always sent, it won't matter if formatting as just numeric and no dashes/spaces/parenthesis. But yeah, I like my displays to have formatting characters for readability too.

  • Gary (unregistered)

You're not supposed to type in the phone number. Use the up/down arrows, that's what they're there for.

Presumably the number will be formatted correctly if you hit "up" five billion or so times.

Given the convention that embassies and consulates constitute part of their home country

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such convention.

The phone problem is far too common to warrant being here.

I've hit the reverse with credit card numbers--there was a javascript formatter that broke it into groups of 4--which didn't work when it was pasted in. 16 digits were rejected as not being formatted right.

Really good varticle on embassies by Wendover Productions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUsqnD9-42g

Yes, I just made up "varticle"

  • (nodebb)

I kinda interpret the eBay one as "We will definitely ship within the UK, we may ship elsewhere if you ask beforehand and pay all costs

I've asked several shippers who have those shipping terms and they all replied to say they definitely only ship to the UK and nowhere else.

the input right below it, where you have the option to change the ship-to country.

The only option available is "United Kingdom". You can't change it to anything else.

  • (nodebb)

What, only digits in the phone number? How would I store 0118 999 88199 9119 725 3 where at least the rightmost space is absolutely mandatory?

  • (nodebb)

Ah yes, but which United Kingdom? The United Kingdom of Sierra Leone maybe?

  • Officer Johnny Holzkopf (unregistered) in reply to JoeMs2018

Not only +, -, and ( and ) can be part of formatted phone numbers, / also can: See 0123 / 45678-123 as a german example, where 0123 is the "city code", 45678- is the "entry node" (which typically cannot be dialed as is), and -123 is the extension; usually -0 or sometimes -01 is the corresponding exchange. The equivalent "non-native" formatting is +49 123 45678123, giving you no indication of how to dial the exchange (could be 4567812-0, 456781-0, 45678-0, maybe 4567-0, depending on the net's size). "+49 " within Germany needs to be "manually converted" to a 0, of course. Other common formattings include adding spaces at random places, so +49 (123) 45 67 81 23, +49 12 34 56 78 12 3 or even +49 12345 6781 23 can be found, with varying degrees of readability and usability. It makes so much fun to add all possibilities and use +49 - (0)1 23 / 45 67 81 2 3 to see if the input form can do math...

Even funnier is requiring a phone number to be 7 digits.

  • t (unregistered) in reply to Officer Johnny Holzkopf

Not sure what you mean about giving no information how to dial it? It's not wrong to just dial the full number afaik?

  • Jeff Jefferson (unregistered) in reply to Jeremy Pereira

Maybe it's a shill but they get extra points for "Vladi marvellous".

  • OccasionalEbaySeller (unregistered)

As someone in the UK who has recently had occasion to list some items on EBay, I can confirm that if you set your listing options to "ships to UK only" then the example shown is exactly how it gets displayed. No, I have no idea why either.

  • (nodebb)

At a wild guess: some UK government regulation that prohibits some kind of trade to those countries, so to be on the safe side they add that to any listing from a UK seller?

Does it show the same list of exclusions if you have a wider shipping area than just the UK?

  • Kebein (unregistered)

One thing to add on the Twitch Password Check: it has problems with the german umlauts (ä,ö,ü) and the Safety Check fails, as soon as it finds one of these
