Well, once you get a 'fudge', then all you have to do is perform a linear search by adding in many more try/except-fudge statements until you find the culprit; duh!
Admin
What the fudge!
Admin
"we mostly try to keep profanity off our main page"
The big WTF in the site's name stands for What The Fudge, presumably!

Worse Than Failure
There's history there. 😆 BTW instead of A Christmas Story I was expecting to see The Good Place
Admin
Binary search, duh!
Admin
Holy forking shirtballs, that's a good reference
Admin
Except that would be smart(er) and fast(er)...

Ha, I was actually aware of the "worse than failure" thing (it's from long before I was reading the site, or indeed working in anything related to IT, but I've spent a fair while reading older articles here...)

There was an episode of the Bill Cosby show (the 60's one, not the 80's sweater wearing one) where his basketball team was having trouble with swearing. He instituted a rule that if you swore, you had to run 10 laps, and if anyone laughed, you had to run 10 laps backwards. So in the climactic scene, a player made a mistake and was about to swear, but refrained and belted out "Oh...Double marshmallow!" That's still my go-to.

Johnny Dangerously did this brilliantly with Roman Moroni: "I would like to direct this to the distinguished members of the panel: You lousy cork-soakers. You have violated my farging rights. Dis somanumbatching country was founded so that the liberties of common patriotic citizens like me could not be taken away by a bunch of fargin iceholes... like yourselves".

I'm afraid that spec is out of date. For the most recent spec, please see https://thedailywtf.com/articles/Announcement-A-New,-New,-New-Name!
Therefore, the current canonical name of this site is: “The Daily WTF.”
Addendum 2026-06-11 10:02: Note that the exclamation point above is actually part of the URL.
