Frist, how should this battery status be displayed?

  • LazerFX (unregistered)

I don't see a WTF in the AccuBattery display. It's 104% of the 'nominal design' charge (A new battery, basically). It's powered up 5 times, with a total charge that is 2.5x the battery volume (250% mAh charged). That means that the result is pretty solid, as the battery has been discharged and re-charged 2.5 times to get the value.

    So... what's the WTF?

Kicking of full compilation at one, two, five... no three

  • Hasseman (unregistered) in reply to Sir Galahad

First shalt thou take out the Holy Compitation Button, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then perform thou thy Holy compilation of tho program towards thy end, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

About the zip file. If you do have a folder named something.zip it will be a folder and not a zip file. no problem there.

  • Brian (unregistered)

Form the second one: "Please note: only shelters which are currently open will show up in searches." So not finding a shelter in the search isn't necessarily a WTF; perhaps all the shelters in the town are at capacity and listed as closed.

Anyone minded of that song from the 80s "Zip it up and start again"?

What kind of wretched gas station makes you prepay with a credit card? Pumps with plastic card terminals have been around for like 25 years now.

  • In defense of the indefensible (unregistered) in reply to Brian

Or perhaps the hurricane wiped the location right off the map. So when the site said "new port richey" not found it was making a commentary about the storm damage?

(OK, I know that wasn't the case, but still...)

  • airdrik (unregistered)

Except that it isn't saying that it couldn't find a shelter in/near the searched-for location, it's saying that it couldn't find the searched-for location (as though New Port Richey doesn't exist (did they assume it was cleared away by the hurricane/flooding?)). If the problem were that there were no open shelters in/near the location then it should say that.

It looks like they fixed that problem, though, as going to their site and searching for 'new port richey' now brings up several results.

  • Sam (unregistered) in reply to LazerFX

Agreed. You could confused-programmer-proof the last statement though by saying "Based on 5 sessions with a total of 5,790 mAh charged (1.59 cycles)"

  • Sam (unregistered) in reply to operagost

Lack of CRIND (card reader in dispenser) is somewhat common on truck/fleet diesel pumps because there's a variety of different fleet cards, so some stations don't bother to deal with the integration and use a stand-alone terminal inside. Often the cards require input like a driver ID, vehicle number and odometer reading so it's non-trivial. There's some stations which, because their volume is so low, still call in the card and use a manual imprinter. There's also some other features like cash advance or per diem which operate like cash back at a grocery store, so you have to go inside.

You'll also find non-CRIND pumps for lesser used fuels, e.g. ethanol free, E85, biodiesel, off-road dyed diesel, high octane/race, kerosene... It easily costs tens of thousands of dollars to install one: it was a recent issue with chip cards; you may have to tear up the concrete to install the conduits and wiring necessary for a Ethernet link to the pump.

SECRET THAT THE HARD DRIVE MANUFACTURERS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW!

If you zip that zip file enough times, it'll compress down to nothingness.

  • Creed (unregistered)

Man, just imagine somebody had that amount of money in their credit card and wouldnt've even noticed it was gone.

  • TotallyNotAnEvacuee (unregistered)

I don't think the FloridaEvacuates one is fair. We're looking at a website created on the fly in response to a developing disaster. There really isn't time to test everything before pushing it out to production. It's very much a case of worse is better, where it's far more important to get something out than to get it right. Errors should be expected.

Wherever those battery reports come from is unreliable on a lot of hardware. E.g. my laptop the design capacity always changes to match the last full capacity.

TRWTF is that TDWTF staff claim to be such amazing coders, they even wrote their own CMS and a forum system that doesn't follow the #1 rule of programming: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", a.k.a. Discourse, instead of going with something standard such as *bb, SMF or other sane forum system, yet they apparently are unable to do such a basic thing and protect this site from spammers, a thing that doesn't happen on out of the shelf CMS-es and forums unless said CMS/forum is misconfigured.

  • James (unregistered)

Most of these are not really Error'ds, and the spam in the comments is ridiculous.

  • Mikey (unregistered)

I'm literally here on the same day as you guys, and not seeing any spam... (and I've never seen any?) -- so, I guess they fixed it?

    Also, fuck Discourse.

What kind of wretched gas station makes you prepay with a credit card?

Apparently in the good 'ol U.S.A. you're expected to know how much petrol you're going to buy in advance and pay for it before they'll dispense it. (Here in the UK you can decide how much petrol you want to buy, and then pay for it at the kiosk afterwards, although the situation is slightly different for pay at pump, which is like a hotel room in that they make a reserve on the card.)

  • foxyshadis (unregistered) in reply to Hasseman

I totally believed a friend in high school who told me that if I zipped a file ten times it would keep getting smaller. I think the disappointment of that experiment was my first introduction to information theory.

  • David C. (unregistered) in reply to urkerab

It depends on the station and what you're paying with.

If you "pay at the pump" with a debit card, they usually place a hold ($100-200) on your account to make sure you're good for whatever the final price ends up at. When you're done, they debit the actual amount and release the hold. Your bank should release the hold immediately, but sometimes it takes a few days to go away. Using a credit card, they usually create a "pending" charge for $100-200 and then replace it with the actual amount when you're done pumping - that change usually takes place immediately.

If you "pay inside" with cash, you prepay some amount. The pump is set to stop after that much gas has been pumped. If your car doesn't need that much, you go inside to get your change afterward. Paying inside with a credit or debit card usually results in them placing a hold (or a pending charge) for a fairly large amount - often as high as $1000, which is pretty stupid, but not uncommon. They release the hold/update the charge when you're done pumping, but your bank may take a while to process the release.

It's pretty sleazy. I assume it's because they want to force you to pay at the pump or use cash, so they make it as painful as possible if you insist on handing a card to a cashier.

Re: last entry...whaddaya bet the filename parser just scanned for the first decimal point, saw that the following 3 letters were not "z-i-p," and bailed?

Change the first "." to "_" and I bet it would work.

OK, so I'm 5 months late with my advice. It was totally worth the wait!
