    The part about the VC continually distracting the startup with unrelated work says all you need to know about the startup's long-term chances. (If the startup needed that work to keep the lights on, it means the VC hadn't invested enough actual venture capital money...)

    the "huge emergency" is the WTF. At least rehearse your demo (with ample time to spare) if the client is that important.

    Kudos to Aniket for resolving this.

    It really depends on the startup. In this case, aside from money, it sounds like giving the kids a chance to gain some business experience was not a bad thing.

    As for money, we don't know what the ownership structure was. Giving the startup some profitable ancillary work might be to let the founders maintain a decent stake - effectively the profits are cash they can invest alongside their labour.

    To me, TRWTF is an IT resource not having access to a Linux demo server. I understand that when you reach a certain size, you need processes and roles, but here we have a startup and image files are somehow protected? On a demo website?

    I don't see how rehearsing the demo would have mattered--they didn't realize someone was going to be offended at how clothing is typically illustrated.

    This project was actually the job of another team at another one of the VC's companies. We were called in to share the workload. The demo server was set up by the other team, but the servers were ours. That's why I had some access, but not access to the directory the server was being served from

    Mmm why nobody talks about the real wtf: he was running a webserver using python. He will lose the connection after closing his laptop, therefore kill the ssh session, and the python webserver on port 8000 will be killed
