This makes you want to take a shower... but is acceptable. Any method that works is ok in a huge emergency. Now, if this stays this way on the next day, without redoing it the right way - that says a lot about the future chances of the startup.

  • (nodebb)

that says a lot about the future chances of the startup.

The part about the VC continually distracting the startup with unrelated work says all you need to know about the startup's long-term chances. (If the startup needed that work to keep the lights on, it means the VC hadn't invested enough actual venture capital money...)

  • Industrial Automation Engineer (unregistered) in reply to akozakie

the "huge emergency" is the WTF. At least rehearse your demo (with ample time to spare) if the client is that important.

Kudos to Aniket for resolving this.

  • Zed (unregistered) in reply to akozakie

It would be still like that to this day, if the startup hadn't imploded two weeks later.

  • Dave (unregistered) in reply to Steve_The_Cynic

It really depends on the startup. In this case, aside from money, it sounds like giving the kids a chance to gain some business experience was not a bad thing.

As for money, we don't know what the ownership structure was. Giving the startup some profitable ancillary work might be to let the founders maintain a decent stake - effectively the profits are cash they can invest alongside their labour.

To me, TRWTF is an IT resource not having access to a Linux demo server. I understand that when you reach a certain size, you need processes and roles, but here we have a startup and image files are somehow protected? On a demo website?

  • (nodebb)

If he had access via sudo why couldn't he just rm the files in their protected folder??

I just read this story this morning on Reddit. Y'all did a great job of editing. https://www.reddit.com/r/talesfromtechsupport/comments/wefdcb/you_want_to_change_images_five_minutes_before_the/

  • Conradus (unregistered) in reply to Ross_Presser

"Access to sudo" doesn't necessarily mean "Access to root as sudo".

  • Conradus (unregistered) in reply to Conradus

Nor, now that I spend a few minutes thinking about it, does it mean "Access to the commands you need on sudo".

  • Barry Margolin (github) in reply to akozakie

10 years later, a new developer asks the senior developer "Why do we serve the images from port 8000?"

  • (author) in reply to Bet Rob

    Thanks!

For clarity, Aniket submitted it here as well. I didn't see it on Reddit. For obvious reasons, I don't grab stories from Reddit without talking to the poster first.

  • Yikes (unregistered)

Those Amish VC's can be so conservative!

  • Loren Pechtel (unregistered)

I don't see how rehearsing the demo would have mattered--they didn't realize someone was going to be offended at how clothing is typically illustrated.

  • (nodebb)

"For the purposes of this demo we're working with a mockup of a standard clothing store since that'll allow us to demonstrate more of the features of the software. The children's-clothing version is obviously a bit more limited, but that means we can't demonstrate all of our features".

Talk about "fixing" things at completely the wrong end of the problem.

  • (nodebb)

Am I the only one worried that the arrangement is still working on Production seven years later?

  • Culturally unaware (unregistered) in reply to Loren Pechtel

The VC had forgotten to explain that the demo was for a Saudi owned store chain?

  • Aniket (unregistered) in reply to kAlvaro

Don't worry. We lost the project after a while

  • Aniket (unregistered) in reply to Mr. TA

This project was actually the job of another team at another one of the VC's companies. We were called in to share the workload. The demo server was set up by the other team, but the servers were ours. That's why I had some access, but not access to the directory the server was being served from

Next week on TDWTF: a major clothing store's web site loses all static content when a security consultant deleted an assumed redundant Python installation on the nginx server.

Mmm why nobody talks about the real wtf: he was running a webserver using python. He will lose the connection after closing his laptop, therefore kill the ssh session, and the python webserver on port 8000 will be killed

  • (nodebb)

    i like that

Addendum 2023-03-22 12:41: If you are faced with the fact that you do not know where to buy the best clothing brands, I hasten to help you. I myself once did not know where to buy usually and therefore sought solutions. Fortunately, they found them. Here I found In Europe, the most popular online marketplaces are https://inlower.com/brands and I bought just amazing brand-name clothes there, no fakes and so on. That's more important now than ever. I hope I was able to help you with that as well. Good luck.
