Free education? Ah, those were the days. Soon may they return. I'd vote for this Rockwood guy in a shot.

  • Onald Ump (unregistered)

I was waiting for her to solve the problem, but the campaign would cheap out and not have $30 to pay her or hire her.

  • (nodebb)

I'm confused, where is the WTF? Old guy not familiar with todays tech... Situation normal. Tech who is to full of himself to admit when he doesn't know something... also normal. New tech stepping up and getting things working... oh there it is, she would have been tossed out, and her phone confiscated as part of the current tech solution... that would be normal.

    "Mercy the Mercenary in…"?

Looks like we're up for another series of articles, about the various adventures of Mercy, or should I say Mercyo?

    Also, where's the WTF?

  • JustSomeDudette (unregistered)

I think the WTF is it didn't result in Mercy getting arrested or stiffed on payment - after all that's pretty much the way it was heading. Or maybe it's the Independent candidate in an otherwise binary electoral system, the equivalent of the boolean 'File not found' state.

  • (nodebb)

I think the WTF is supposed to be Ellis.

  • operagost (unregistered)

The WTF is, of course, not old guys who don't understand new technology, but old guys who still don't have enough sense to test something before taking it to a live event.

  • Ron Fox (google) in reply to Onald Ump

My brother works in the political consulting business. He has a drawer full of checks from candidates at all levels (anybody remember Gary Hart's presidential run)....all of them NSF.

Yeah I thought the WTF would be that Mercy got arrested Ellis was triumphant and there was no $30.00 to give her.

  • Ron Fox (google) in reply to KattMan

...she would have been tossed out, and her phone confiscated as part of the current tech solution....

Ellis tried. That he failed was the WTF

  • Toby Johnson (google)

"Regardless, DVI was designed not to work with analog input."

That's the WTF... DVI was expressly designed to interoperate with analog (though most commonly that was VGA, which the camcorder probably didn't have): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface#Connector

    Amusing story though.

  • Jeff Shitwood (unregistered) in reply to KattMan

Don't ask such stupid questions. TRWTF is, and has always been, Alex Papadumbass. He even dumped my awesome Discourse, can you believe how stupid this guy is?

  • That Guy (unregistered)

DVI as a standard allowed analog. But the author probably meant DVI-D, as A2D converters are not usually found in cheap video USB dongles. DVI-D (and DVI-A) use a subset of the DVI pins. And even if they did, composite/s-video to DVI would require a powered converter. The talk of "adapters" implies that is not the case.

But I thought TRWTFs were (a) Apparently Marcy left her phone behind, transmitting, as she went back to her apartment. A high degree of trust. (b) A portfolio site that didn't work in sub-IE11. I guess she never wanted a job at a Fortune 500 (which may get IE 11 this year).

  • Celti (unregistered) in reply to Toby Johnson

Actually, analog compatibility for DVI is entirely optional, as your Wikipedia link quite clearly states with the presence of DVI-D.

  • Dan (unregistered)

"Free education? Ah, those were the days. Soon may they return. I'd vote for this Rockwood guy in a shot."

Good luck finding educators who will work for free.

"(b) A portfolio site that didn't work in sub-IE11. I guess she never wanted a job at a Fortune 500 (which may get IE 11 this year)."

The article states that it DID work with the old IE. It just didn't show the fancy gradients, which reduced the wow-factor.

"Ellis, caught in the act of throwing out the one person who was making Rockwood happy, faking a toothy, shark-like smile, and returned to his seat. The officer returned to the door, leaving Mercy with her duct-taped phone. She waved. ... Before Ellis had another chance to toss her out of the gym, Mercy headed back to her apartment. "

I was expecting the WTF to be that she left her phone attached to the tripod and Ellis "lost" it when he went to take everything down.

She's a real go-getter, that's for sure. Also, a bit rude when she ripped the guy's laptop out of his hands and started fooling around with it without his permission.

  • DJPGB (google)

Mercy's fee was $50/hour. Let's say she works four 40-hour weeks in a month for the campaign. How does $3000/month sound? It sounds like less than $19/hour.

  • Nicholas "LB" Braden (github) in reply to That one guy

Yeah, why did she leave her phone?

Addendum 2016-04-04 13:36: She was clearly in need of money and so couldn't afford to leave behind something valuable like that.

  • (nodebb) in reply to DJPGB

I was wondering about that too. It looks like the WTFs in this article are all hidden gems. ;)

  • Foo AKA Fooo (unregistered) in reply to DJPGB

Assuming she works full-time. Which she'd most likely not do if paid by the hour; and as stated, she didn't have much other work to choose from.

As for leaving the phone behind, what's the betting it didn't happen and was just a detail overlooked in the process of embel^W"anonymization".

  • Happy Ending (unregistered)

I'm actually left with a good feeling to read someone being appreciated for once.

  • (nodebb) in reply to Jeff Shitwood

Stupid Alex was at least smart enough to get rid of discord, I mean discourse; discord will never leave here.

  • Matt Westwood (unregistered) in reply to Dan

Education is free up until at least BSc in a lot of Europe.

  • Making it up (unregistered) in reply to KattMan

Discourse was better for article comments than this featureless (visually and functionally) void.

  • Bill C. (unregistered)

A happy ending? TRWTF is that they forgot which politician gets it.

  • (nodebb) in reply to Ron Fox

"He has a drawer full of checks from candidates at all levels[...] ....all of them NSF." Why are there so many candidates from the National Science Foundation?

(I assume this means insufficient funds or some such.)

  • Olivier (unregistered) in reply to Dan

Free education does not mean that the professors are not being paid. It only means that the students are not the ones directly paying for them.

At it has some advantages: you don't have to graduate a student because he managed to cash the bills: if he is not good enough, lazy, whatsoever, he will fail.So that keeps the bad students out from the degree.

On the other hand, if a student is brilliant enough, he will not have to work his head off to fund his studies or worry about some scholarship that may be impossible to find. And his helps making sure every good student can graduate.

  • Toby Johnson (google) in reply to Celti

Actually, that does nothing to negate my assertion that the phrase "DVI was designed not to work with analog input" is incorrect. Its being optional does not mean that DVI was "designed not to work with" analog. HDMI and DisplayPort were "designed not to work with" analog, but not DVI. And I was being intentionally nit-picky after all the calls for TRWTF following what I thought was an enjoyable article, even if it didn't follow the typical formula.

  • alexdelphi (unregistered)

"Mercy would have left then and there, but she remembered how much beans and rice $30 could buy..." Excuse me (I'm not from US), is "beans and rice" an allusion to something?

  • $30 (unregistered)

Among varieties food the US has, beans and rice are relatively cheap. The moderately ironic wording assumes that $30 worth of rice and beans will provide more food than $30 of (for example) zucchini and fried chicken, and clarifies how much she needs $30.

  • Passer-by (unregistered)

I think Eric Gern should stop working at TheDailyWTF and write a book. He clearly wants to be a writer.

And TDWTH would continue to have actual WTF stories, not some scribbler's first attempts at writing novels.

It seems I need to start looking at article author name first to avoid Eric Gern's articles. Again.

  • Anonymous (unregistered) in reply to $30

Among varieties food the US has, beans and rice are relatively cheap.

They're also very nutritious and a "complete protein", which (according to Wikipedia) "provides each of the amino acids the body cannot make for itself".

As figures of speech go, "remembered how much beans and rice $30 could buy" is a step up from "remembered how much ramen $30 could buy"; ramen would not only be super-cheap but it'd also not be a terribly nutritious or balanced diet.

  • (nodebb)

    cool

Addendum 2022-11-02 22:33: I cannot claim to be talented in either writing or art. So when I needed to pass university essays, I resorted to the phd service . Such services were really helpful to me when I was studying. My wording was truly terrible, and there was nothing I could do to fix it.
