I've always been greatly amused at the fact that "railway station" in Russian is a word which phoneticises as "vokzal" -- which is a direct borrowing of the English placename "Vauxhall".

Ivan! that is not a trip, google maps just want you to find Waldo again

Amusingly enough, the Gas Networks Ireland thing still isn't fixed: https://www.gasnetworks.ie/home/gas-meter/report-meter-tampering/thank-you/

That IEEE one looks more like a case of human error. The fields aren't written in a way that looks like it was intended for automated substitution. So someone probably sent out a template to someone else, and that someone else didn't understand that it was a template and just sent it out as-is.

the first one reminded me of one i saw where someone tried to use a "trip planner" program to plan a trip from New York to Tampa Bay (Florida), and it suggested going by way of...Chicago!

yeah - how could a utility company possibly make any money with lorem ipsum text on their website? what fools...obviously this should be their top priority. fuck it, change the vision/mission of the company to reflect that.

fucking programmers, always missing the forest for the trees and thinking they're smarter than everyone else...

I do some of the graphics programming for Google Maps, and I've never seen a bug like the one posted. If it's an older phone, it's almost definitely a bug in the GPU driver - those always look particularly strange.

google maps is fun. I wanted to find out how far it was from Cheddar Gorge to the coast.

Apparently there's a restaurant on the Isle of Wight called 'The Coast'. Well, it's certainly close to a coast, but not quite the one I wanted.

So I tried with just 'coast'

That's apparently a town near London.

I gave up and looked at the map and used Weston Super Mare as the nearest reference.

Assuming Ivan is Russian born, I feel sorry he had to learn another alphabet before being able to use a phone.

Also, they seem to really object to meter "tempering".

  • RLB (unregistered) in reply to stal

@stal Well, wouldn't you? Heating the meters up to red-hot temperatures and then plunging them into icy water just cannot be good for their accuracy.

Amusingly enough, the Gas Networks Ireland thing still isn't fixed.

Still pretty amusing, the Gas Networks Ireland page is STILL not fixed

  • Lucas (unregistered)

Yeah, still not fixed to this day.
