Impossible!

It does depend on the quality of the hardware and firmware; a lot of PC laptops have distinctly dodgy touchpads (and some types of software — notably games — are just plain awful with a touchpad). On the other hand, using a mouse is much more awkward when you don't have a convenient desk.
Mice also used to push me towards RSI, whereas a touchpad doesn't due to the better wrist position needed to use it. Avoiding aching wrists is a great motivator.
Well, I'm kind of old school I suppose.

I don't have problems with using the pad for positioning and selection, though I hate the imprecision compared to the mouse. But so far I would swear that every touch pad I have used picks up touches from my fingers just being "close" not actually touching the pad. So I wind up disabling them because, if I don't, the mouse keeps jumping (at random intervals) all over the screen. I'm trying to type here and all of a sudden I'm typing way up there to the left, and I didn't command that.

So far, I have found them just annoying.

That rules out Linux hardware then

So, not that I'm complaining about a derail or anything-- but am I to assume that ever since Discourse replaced article comments, there are effectively no article comments anymore?

no, they were working for a while... Looks like something in discourse changed and @PaulaBean isn't working quite right anymore.

either that or no one pointed that part of her at the new server after we migrated to a new droplet.

Seems to be more of a problem for people visiting the forums from the frontpage than it is for people visiting the frontpage from the forums...

Yeah, that's what I meant. Just doing a (massively unscientific) sample of frontpage articles, and there seems to be significantly fewer commentors, and significantly fewer comments.

Doesn't help when Article threads remain unlisted :stuck_out_tongue:

nor when email settings are completely borked for weeks on end so no one can register because discourse can't contact mandril to actually send the email

I'm sure the requirement for an account is depressing comments. As I rarely went into article comments before, I can't say whether that's good or bad. The old comment system seemed set up to make a comment and forget about it. No way to get back to where you were or notifications that anyone replied to you, etc.

That's not true, blakey. There were a bunch of people who did register during that period. Since you couldn't get emails from the old TDWTF and you can't get emails from the new TDWTF, maybe it's not all TDWTF's WTF, eh?

If that be the case why this topic?

I think the answer boils down to, Email, how do they work‽ It seems pretty well known that some people have never gotten emails and some have. But when the first rant appeared, I looked and there were new users who got in and posted during that time. I can't say how it all went down, but they were there.

.... that would be discourse for you.....

still...... how the flagnar was it sending email if the smtp configuration was messed up and/or the smtp server didn't have the IP of the droplet whitelisted?

.... the world may never know.

Unless @PJH was manually approving accounts? I know he did for a few bot accounts…

  • (disco) in reply to RaceProUK

given his email address isn't public that would imply that everyone who signed up in that period was a sockpuppet....

and i'm pretty sure that's not the case.

The only approvals I've made have been for sock' accounts, after being requested to do so.

  • (disco)

I, for one, didn't get a single email in the period between droplet migration and SMTP fixage.

Now they are back and arriving as punctually as ever: about 10 minutes after I read the thing they are notifying me about.

this reminds me of a story i read about Regina vacuum cleaners. for some reason, maybe to cut costs, they started making their vacuums with PLASTIC motors, deliberately ignoring the facts that motors get hot, and that plastic melts! and when the majority of their customers demanded refunds, they FAKED their figures and pretended the returns never happened! i forget how it ended, but they got in BIG trouble eventually.
