    We use Puppet for automating our production deployments. While we grumble, the grumbling is usually reserved for those people who forget/neglect to tell the deployment script everything and decide to hack a few extra bits themselves.

    We don't use it on most of our test servers. Sometimes you've got to figure things out the hard way (or be able to denormalize things to emulate some lunatic Gentoo lover customer deployment).

    Nowadays Ansible seems to be the craze around here after someone had a Puppet master server drop out or something. Afterwards, that person went off to make his own Ansible web UI and REST backend, which I guess Puppet had all along.

    EDIT: Maybe the Ansible Docs might be a better starting point - at least there you get an explanation of what Ansible is.
