I appreciate a WTF that is based solely on the ambiguity between America the continent and America the nickname for the United States of [part of the continent of] America.

  • Brian Boorman (google) in reply to Steve_The_Cynic

By "America the continent" I assume you mean North America the continent, because let's not forget about the other continent with America in its name.

By "North America the continent" I assume you mean in the model where America is considered to be two continents, because let's not forget about other interpretations of the word "continent" in which it is one.

Also note enormous size of the United States of America - some 9 long billion square kilometers. That hardly fits on the surface of the sun, but how do they do it on earth?

You put it on a space-enfolding bus.

They need the space for the population of 331000000 million people

Maybe I'm just too US-centric culturally, but what struck me about the awkward "United States of America" boilerplate was how the laundry list of apps one could enjoy in the USA using their eSims was ... Exactly what an American, in no need of their eSim, would have on their phone.

If indeed they're targeting furriner tourists to the USA, I'd think the apps they'd want to use would be the ones they use at home. And those would be the ones the website would list for familiarity to their customers.

Yes, I'm aware that outside, e.g. China and Russia the world of popular phone apps is a bit of a US-centric lake. Somehow I just expected a more exotic list.

As to Caleb's pic of a snowy day obscuring his bus, I think that's an artifact of someone using a phone to do a computer's job.

As a user, I insist that if I click on both the "Unsubscribe" and "Subscribe" buttons, then hit "Update preferences", that I'll get subscribed about half the time, and unsubscribed about half the time, and a nice binomial distribution if I do it all day long. Any other result is a bug.

  • BornInTheUSA (unregistered) in reply to WTFGuy

But WTFGuy, I'm an American and I have exactly Zero of those apps installed on my phone.

  • Foo AKA Fooo (unregistered) in reply to BornInTheUSA

What a coincidence, I have exactly the same as you, and I'm not an American.

Anyway, I think most other apps we typically have installed here are from local companies or local services, so we usually wouldn't use them much while traveling abroad. So, sadly though, the list seems not far off.

But really thanks to that site for pointing out the huge size of the USA. Many tourists mistakenly think they can visit it all in a few days. If you plan to visit, say (to pick 3 random ones from the list), America, Houston, and Texas, you better plan 3 separate trips, right?

Wondering what the names of the provinces are among USA's "50 states/provinces"

Don't do that. I meant the whole continent, from the northernmost bits of Canada all the way south to the very tip of Chile/Argentina.

Texas (birth-state of the late Mrs Cynic if you don't mind) is a pretty big place all by itself, and saying that you want to visit "Texas" is a bit like (only more so) saying that you want to visit France. (I chose France because I live there. I live about an hour from the capital on the train, that is, around 150 miles, maybe a bit more(1).)

    (1) French high speed trains (trans: Train(s) à Grande Vitesse, TGV) actually are high speed. The slowest of them can break 180 mph(2). The fastest, the V150, which was, admittedly, specially tuned for it, managed half the speed of sound...

    (2) One of the models that just breaks 180 mph is the only truly "high speed" train that runs in the UK. Yes, the Eurostar trains are just elaborate extra-long TGVs.

@BornInTheUSA: Of that list I have only Uber. I simply recognize the others as more or less standard contents on a lot of Americans' smartphones.

When my parents last visited the United States of America, they noticed that the "international news" section of the newspapers mostly contained articles about other parts of the United States of America. So maybe if you're a New Yorker visiting Texas (or vice versa), you do need international roaming?

For anyone thinking the comment about Texas cf. France was slightly hyperbolic, refer https://www.thetruesize.com/#?borders=1~!MTQ3ODkzNTA.MTE2Nzg4MjAMjI0MTA2NjY(MTQwNDc4NzM~!US-TXODMwMjY3NA.MjI0NDI2OTI)NQ~!FR*MA.MTgwMDAwMDA)Ng

One of the 50 states, Hawaii, isn’t even on the “American continent.”

Of course America is in the USA. According to the text, the USA has a land area approximately 18,00 times that of planet Earth. So everything in the World is in the USA.

Perhaps the officlal language of the USA really is "null", because their speech was freed?

  • Nick J (unregistered)

It seems that the USA has an area of nearly 18000 times greater than the entire planet Earth.
