I notice that a bunch of people "liked" your so-called contribution. They are idiots. You might equally well have suggested posting in argle-flargle for all the use it was.

Not everybody knows what this so-called "t/1000" is. I certainly don't, and the onus shouldn't be on me to do the work necessary to decode your blitherings.

Except it's not even notional in case of reverse charge.

VAT is probably the most complicated taxation system in the world.

not sure when that started, but as you've already found out that's the likes thread.

there was a point where we were changing the title like every five minutes so the topic id became a shorthand for it.(because http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/1000 works no matter what the actual title is at the moment) the variation t/1k is floating around too but is less popular.

that's the rule of the thread. there's a fair few like scripts floating around to help you catch up, and some of us (most notably my queen and i) run a nerfed version of @sockbot that likes the posts in that thread automatically and over time catches up on the backlog.

Me, I read it as Exclusive OR, probably a bad habit influenced by one of the eight-bit microprocessor mnemonic sets. (Hmm. Goggle tells me it is more than one of them, as the standard mnemonic sets for both 6502 and 6809 used EOR. Intel and Zilog seem to have preferred XOR.)

When your definition of better is that you don't want to be reminded about how regressive your tax regime is?

  • (disco) in reply to boomzilla

Where my idea of 'better' is not having to worry about the sales tax rate changing when I drive to a neighbouring county

  • (disco) in reply to RaceProUK

Sweet, we have equivalent systems, then. I don't think I've ever worried about that.

  • (disco) in reply to boomzilla

It may have changed since, but when I was in Florida on holiday (August 2001; yes, that close), you could go to one shop and pay 8%, then drive half an hour away to the next county and pay 7% sales tax.

In the UK, it's 20% everywhere (that's the standard rate; certain items have a lower rate, but it's always the same throughout the country).

    And this...worried you? Especially given:

    RaceProUK:

I'll bet there was more difference in the base prices than in the sales tax rate.

Insofar as the rate kept changing and I had to factor it into the price of stuff I was buying, yes
  • (disco) in reply to RaceProUK

Yeah. We have the federal tax, the state, the county, the city. In some places, they're 0, but it means you never know how much you're paying. For instance, we often have special county tax assessments (like .25%) that is allocated specifically at some project - like BART. These are usually short-term things that expire, but may be renewed. "short" means anywhere from 1 yr to many years. (I think the rate is about 8.5% where I live now.)

    boomzilla:

That's because you don't venture far from your Blue-ish front lawn ;)

Cross the river and the sales tax is different... and if you buy restaurant food in Old Town I believe you'll have a different rate... Did they ever pass the Metro tax district to pay for rail to Dulles? I thought that was going to have county-specific rates

But *all are less than 20%.

Not that it really matters, too, too, much.... all the things have to get paid for somehow... mostly pretty much the same for most folk

You think that's bad? Try worrying about the overall sales tax rate changing just because you cross city lines! Arizona has its sales tax, Maricopa county doesn't, but some of the cities around here do! of course, it's a matter of <2%, so not really a big deal. You only worry about it for big sales, like cars.

Welcome to local sales tax. Cities and counties sometimes impose their own levies. (When I lived in Tampa, there was an extra 1% tax, to fund a new stadium for..I think the Buccaneers, but probably not.)
