If you think that's an insane option to have, try "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" slightly further down the same page of the options dialog.

With that option selected, if you double-click an Excel file in Windows Explorer, Excel will start up, but not load the file - because Windows is using DDE to tell it to open the file.

The option probably made sense in the days when recalculating a workbook could take several minutes. Now, it just confuses users who haven't seen the problem before.

What's even better is that it uses semi-circular definitions in the Help documentation. [image]

Well, by default... but you could still invoke it the old-fashioned way:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL.EXE" spreadsheet.xls

Not to mention a little registry modification (it's not a hack if it's doable using built-in tools, right?) that will "disable" DDE in Explorer's launching of said files.
  • (disco) in reply to Tsaukpaetra

Didn't even require registry modification in Windows XP... the built-in File Types manager would let you select it or not:

Beg pardon, but I don't have Excel installed on the VM, so have a VB Project file type that uses DDE instead.

Sorry, I should have qualified it better. The end result is that the built-in tool modifies the registry for you, which registry settings tell Explorer.exe how to launch a given file, and that this does not constitute hacking since it's using the built-in tools.

that "you must call me Professor" line reminded me of a story where the tech retorted, "well, i have a Master's degree, so you must call me MASTER!"

Addendum 2023-01-04 21:55: I used to make tables like this on payments through apple to buy my own books. But I could not figure out how to do it, so I will try to share it with you. I found here why apple books does not accept payment and you can look here too and read the details about it. So I was able to overcome this problem, I hope you will be able to do it too. Good luck.
