What made them think the “parking lot thumb drives” would be specially manufactured with their own unique IDs? Wouldn’t they more likely be standard consumer sticks with malware added? If someone were manufacturing malware sticks at a factory, what’s stopping them from using someone else’s innocuous ID?
If the company is that worried about clueless employees plugging in random shit they found lying on the street, step 1 is issue a policy of “Thou Shalt Not Do That Or Thou Art Fired.” Step 2 is install physical port locks. Step 3, if necessary, is epoxy.
