You mean the dreadful atmosphere, or the dreadful writing?

  • (disco) in reply to Maciejasjmj

I wouldn't have paired it with "Nice article" if I wanted to talk about the writing itself — I meant that it captures that damp and dark atmosphere of unknown cellars and all without descending into some cheap Lovecraftian horror drama.

    Great atmosphere in this one!

Oh god, this articles reminds me of those stories I read about gross things found in people's computers.

Roaches, the dust to end all dust, cigarette smoke residue, a frog. Also a laptop ruined by cat piss.

    A:\> TYPE usher.txt

During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the
clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback,
through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades
of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher. I know not how it
was--but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded
    my spirit.

It's no secret the articles are "dramatized retellings"

    http://www.thedailywtf.com/submit-wtf/story-guidelines

The stories we tell on The Daily WTF (i.e. the Feature Articles) are “dramatized retellings” of actual events. It’s a bit like those “based on a true story” movies you’ve seen: we take the core facts surrounding the WTF moments (the who, what, where, when) and try to create an entertaining, engaging, and memorable story. It’s a fun and challenging excise for us as writers and it’s what most readers come to the site for.

3.5″ diskettes are too expensive for the customer. Fine. But what I don’t get after reading that article is: how did the magnetic disc disappear while leaving the outer shell in the drawer?
  • (disco) in reply to Maciejasjmj

Are you implying the women have half a beard?

  • (disco)

This guy's a wimp. I restore old (pre-digital electronics) pinball machines. Us pinfans find all sorts of stuff in the back box and under the main relay board. Simple things like extra score cards, small tools, spare change, or more unusual items like price list for porn films on VHS tape, small dope stash, and yes dead mice and/or their rampant droppings.

  • (disco) in reply to Gurth

The circular plastic sheet remained where it was, the magnetic layer had been ground to dust by the read/write head.

I was expecting that to be the source of the problem. But it seems they were prepared for that and had a backup boot disk available (unless the disk in the envelope was pure invention, I'm not very good at picking those bits) ...*continues reading*... Oh, the disk had a game on it? Huh, well, there goes that theory then. Well, I suppose it might have been a bootable one too... maybe that's all they actually used The Machine for in the first place?

Ah, yes, re-reading it I see I somehow skipped over most of the sentence before “Die Magnetschicht war weg!” and assumed the guy was talking about the physical disc

Male cats that haven't been fixed like to "mark" everything this way. It's their way of claiming it as personal territory.
