    Raymond must have that aura which makes people around him phrase their questions slightly wrongly, so that he can retort with a technically correct, yet mostly useless answer, leaving the interlocutor to shuffle away somewhat ashamed. Cognitive dissonance will make them say Raymond gave such concise answers and alway knew his stuff, paving the way for the promotion Laurence Peter foresaw in the 1960s.

    I suspect the drugged-out pisshead(1) was thinking it meant "with the naked ID numbers used directly in the code". And by that definition, his objection to the objection wasn't completely unreasonable.

    Not completely, just mostly.

    (1) Given the reputed behaviour of actual rockstars, this seems entirely appropriate as a substitution for "rockstar developer". Think about that interpretation the next time some recruiter comes looking to recruit, and blithers about looking for "rockstar developers"...
