In what universe do those bets make any sense, I wonder. I have a hard time believing something like risk free betting can exist. Who gets duped?

I assume if the airline thing is DST related? 0.958333... days is an accurate measure of how long last Sunday was in Frankfurt. The code that produced it probably isn't even that WTF-y. Sure, a human would calculate the difference between days by subtracting the dates, but a lot of date-time libraries only work in times, so you end up calculating March 27th 00:00 minus March 26th 00:00, a difference of 23 hours.

And you'd never spot the bug in testing, because it only shows up on 2 days out of every 365 and both of them are Sundays.

  • 8AN (unregistered)

0.9583... is 23/24. So the real WTF is daylight saving, when a day could have 23 or 25 hours.

  • (nodebb)

I note that 23/24 is 0.958333..., so I'd post that the airline schedule error is to do with a DST transition, except it's shown as being on Tuesday 28th March (presumably this year), which is 2 days after the those bits of Europe that do DST went to it.

That pickup time is around midday. How are you getting it to midnight?

  • (nodebb) in reply to Athanasius

I bet you're on the right track. Maybe whether the bug is exhibited depends on whether the flight is on the far side of the DST change from the current time rather than on whether the flight will be in the air during the change.

Addendum 2023-03-31 10:16: Meant to say "you two" are on the right track.

Of course you have fire weather! When else are you going to farm fire elementals for clusters? (No-prize for anyone who knows what game this references).

"It's raining right now in this moment" does not mean your area is out of red flag warning/fire danger.

  • Argle (unregistered) in reply to Tank0r

Tank0r, I appreciate the point. However, I did follow the weather pattern at the time. The whole state is soaking wet. I live here, so it's pretty obvious (except to the dense) when everything is dried out and can light from a casually discarded cigarette butt. Butt... I mean... but lately my back yard turned into a jungle because of all the wet weather. Someone's "fire weather" algorithm clearly mis-fired. Thus the errror'd.

A few weeks ago, I reported an error'd regarding the war between MSN and its users in the comment section. I filed grievances with MSN pointing out TDWTF and other crazy responses people were making in their comments. Starting roughly a week ago, I see that ALL comments have been shut off on MSN. Their SI (Simulated Intelligence ... I don't believe AI exists) is probably getting an overhaul.

I’m placing a risk free bet that I’m frist.

  • I dunno LOL ¯\(°_o)/¯ (unregistered) in reply to Conradus

Who waits for weather anymore? Just take a home point teleport to Sky, all the elementals are up there It's like it was a garden or something. (Yes, that's the first thing I thought too when I saw "fire weather".)

  • (nodebb)

Fire weather: Nothing wrong here. Rain at the weather station doesn't preclude fire conditions nearby. It takes time for rain to remove fire conditions.

Shipping label: This easily could be time zones--I think the shipping label time is in local time, not Orlando time.

Flight time: While it probably should have been cleaned up I don't think it's actually wrong.

  • Graculus (unregistered)

Ummmm.... you would spot it in testing if you are used to having to handle time in your business domain (which is many/most). Unfortunately these sort of bugs are very common in many domains due to naivety.

It's an attempt to get the Betfair cash refund. Or as it's been put in pop music:

'Cause what you see you might not get And we can bet, so don't you get souped yet You're scheming on a thing that's a mirage I'm trying to tell you now, it's arbitrage

Until humans thought of rubbing sticks together even the main source.

When you think about it 0:46pm is perfectly fine. The real WTF is that traditionally the hours for both am and pm go 12, 1, 2, 3, ...

The "risk free" bet is possible because they found a difference in the odds between two bookmakers. By betting on Belarus to win with one bookmaker and to lose with the other, you win one bet and lose the other. If they are appropriately sized, either way your winnings will be greater than your losses.

However, don't forget that the odds are always set so in the long run the house wins. I think that with parimutuel betting, the payoff ratio for wins and loses is a little different, with the difference being the house percentage: e.g., if a parimutuel bookie with a 5% house percentage let you bet $1 at 50:50 odds on a coin toss for "heads", you'd lose $1 if it came up tails and win $0.95 if it came up heads. So this trick of taking advantage of a split in the odds between two bookies works only if the split is larger than the house's cut.

Or, IIRC, football betting levels the odds between two teams with a "point spread", reflecting the perceived difference between the teams. (That is, the bookie setting the spread is not trying to reflect the actual odds, but to pick a point where the amounts bet on each team are equal, so the bookie can't lose.) E.g., if there is a 6-point spread and you bet on the better team, you aren't betting on it to win, but to win by over 6 points. Bet on the other team, and you win the bet if it loses by 5 points. But if I understand the system correctly, when the better team wins by 6 points, all bettors lose and the bookie keeps all of their money. With a system like this, it's possible to find a split in the point spread, place opposing bets, and still lose.
