    That last one is an automatically-generated locale that Microsoft use to test exactly the right strings are marked as needing translation (I.e. all UI strings but not things like XML tags). It should not be exposed to the public though. ISTR Raymond Chen blogged about it once but I can't look it up at the moment.

    It's called pseudolocalization

    The Excel Security notice is an advanced security mechanism intended to protect users from unintentionally bypassing security mechanisms. In order to open the possibly-insecure file you must press the following buttons in order: Retry, Try Again, Retry, Retry, Ignore, Ok, Retry, OK. (or was it Retry, Try Again, Retry, Retry, Ignore, OK, Retry, Okay; I can never remember for sure). Failure to reproduce the sequence aborts all attempts to open the file and deletes it from your hard drive for you.

    Raymond's mention of pseudolocalization is (currently) at this address: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20120726-00/?p=7043/ And it links to a post from 2006: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/shawnste/2006/06/27/pseudo-locales-in-windows-vista-beta-2/ Doesn't seem to have an interesting origins story, other than the several tales of bugs uncovered along the way.

    Off topic: ^ oh god my comments page just took 20 times longer to load.

    Just for a datapoint, this post worked fine in Firefox and Chrome on a Mac, and Chrome on a Windows PC, but Edge and IE on the same PC both got knackered by the funny characters in BLAKEYRAT's post (I'm not gonna quote it...)

    And people wonder why sites implement Unicode codepoint filtering. I know of several sites that limit the supported Unicode to just the ASCII 32-96 equivalent codepoints. Everyone complains how "Unicode is not supported" but it is. Just they got so fed up with the crap that the whitelist is set to the ASCII equivalents.

    With the way Telstra's been going in the last few months, I imagine they took the status page down because it was less embarrassing than saying an employee took them down from the inside. Again.

    Same... Edge on mobile crashed; Edge on PC was frozen completely, had to use task manager to kill process; IE11 ground to a halt for several minutes, and didn't even display the Japanese characters correctly; and Firefox slowed down scrolling for about two seconds, then was fine. sigh

    It's funny, the title of this page is completely fitting for Blakeyrat's post, and just needs a little tweaking: "Too ASCII for My Comments Portal."

    javascript:for(let s=window.getSelection(),i=s.rangeCount-1,T=t=>t.normalize('NFKD').replace(/[\u0300-\u036F\u0489]/g,'').split(/(?![\udc00-\udfff])/).join(""),p=n=>n.hasChildNodes()?[].forEach.call(n.childNodes,p):n.data&&r.intersectsNode(n)?(n.data=(n==r.startContainer?n==r.endContainer?n.data.slice(0,r.startOffset)+T(n.data.slice(r.startOffset,r.endOffset))+n.data.slice(r.endOffset):n.data.slice(0,r.startOffset)+T(n.data.slice(r.startOffset)):n==r.endContainer?T(n.data.slice(0,r.endOffset))+n.data.slice(r.endOffset):T(n.data))):0,r,j;i>=0;--i){r=s.getRangeAt(i);p(r.commonAncestorContainer);r.commonAncestorContainer.normalize();s.removeRange(r)}

    kills the Zalgo without hurting the stupid Korean hieroglyphics.

    javascript:for(let s=window.getSelection(),i=s.rangeCount-1,a=Array.apply(0,Array(95)).map((_,i)=>String.fromCharCode(i+32)).sort((a,b)=>a.localeCompare(b)),T=t=>t.normalize('NFKD').replace(/[\u0300-\u036F]/g,'').split(/(?![\udc00-\udfff])/).map(c=>a.indexOf(c)>=0||/\s/.test(c)?c:(a[a.map(a=>c.localeCompare(a)).lastIndexOf(1)]||"")[c==c.toUpperCase()?"toUpperCase":"toLowerCase"]()).join(""),p=n=>n.hasChildNodes()?[].forEach.call(n.childNodes,p):n.data&&r.intersectsNode(n)?(n.data=(n==r.startContainer?n==r.endContainer?n.data.slice(0,r.startOffset)+T(n.data.slice(r.startOffset,r.endOffset))+n.data.slice(r.endOffset):n.data.slice(0,r.startOffset)+T(n.data.slice(r.startOffset)):n==r.endContainer?T(n.data.slice(0,r.endOffset))+n.data.slice(r.endOffset):T(n.data))):0,r,j;i>=0;--i){r=s.getRangeAt(i);p(r.commonAncestorContainer);r.commonAncestorContainer.normalize();s.removeRange(r)}

    kills the Zalgo and attempts to map every character to the closest ASCII representative, which apparently is 'Z' for all of them.

    fingers crossed on the formatting in this post not being completely wrong

    forgot to mention, you have to highlight the weird text -- the bookmarklet only does what's highlighted. Although it doesn't seem to work if you just select all. Whatever.
