Obviously it was broken on display, so it had to be handled to make the boss happy.

Oh, I wouldn't say no-one. Outside of the US, a lot of people find it quite bizarre what is currently happening there re shutdown of government agencies.

Then again: different countries, different ways to do things, so who am I to judge what is the right way to do things for a people?

Well, I know a little Java, Troy thought, as he settled in for a weekend-long debug session.
Trusts an outsourced team implicitly, so much so he can't be bothered to test an Android app before release, yet somehow he manages to debug an Android app when the devs vanish into the ether. Troy is the WTF.

Yes indeed. It happens there fairly frequently - last time it happened was 17 years ago, apparently -- a mere eyeblink in the history of politics.

Clearly it doesn't have a great deal of effect on either the political process or the economy or the US -- both are basket cases.

Exactly. It's not like the Americans are constantly complaining about politics in, say, Europe, unless so provoked. Which is not something that can be said of the Europeans.

Saw some interesting comments the past few days. One of them, that Syria is in the middle of a civil war, and yet it still manages to pay its public servants. The other one was that the Americans are still rich enough to be able to afford such shenanigans.

Oh, and as for the article, I can see that a pretty bare story would need to be embellished; what I'm not convinced about is that it is an actual improvement.

The girls have to leave early and though and Party Animal has a few whiskies to fend off the sudden rush of loneliness. When the pub closes, he decides to rough it and builds up his tent in the moor further down the road. In the middle of the night he is woken by the howling of wolves... getting out of the tent in the light of the full moon he sees that he is surrounded by werewolves. Just when these are about to attack, the romanian girls appear and slaughter them all. I generally write desktop applications for Windows and Linux in a variety of languages, as the needs dictate. I also do web-programming, using HTML and Perl on the server-side and Javascript for the client-side. My Java is really rusty, but I can still read it because of all the work I do in C++ and C#.

This kind of this can happen when marketing sets hard release dates based on the optimistic estimates coming from R&D. Project management finds that when something runs late, like the outsourcing they have no control over, they have to start trimming other important parts of the process, like thorough alpha and beta testing. When project management goes to the guys running the release schedule to say "We need to push things back a month or so because the outsourced development took 3 weeks too long," they get told that they will miss the window of opportunity and besides all the marketing is already set for the original release date. You will have to trim something and will issue patches for any small problems that occur. I have heard that one before.

What gets me is that you outsource the development of a program to another company, when you do not have in-house expertise; this is fine. But you do not review the code when you have access to the source code and enough ability to at least read it. This is the real WTF. The amount of liability this opens you up to is absolutely incredible. A code review will show you so much more about potential problems than even good alpha and beta testing will.

A logic bomb that does not activate until January 1st or February 29 will not show up during your beta test in the middle of September. A small hunk of debug code will not be noticed during a week's beta testing when the program calls "home" once a month to send your personal details and activity logs. In fact, it probably not be noticed until a third-party application firewall pops up and asks if you want to let this application to have access to the internet.

Now admittedly, a code review will require more expertise and more time than just putting a couple of management types in front of the application to test it in ways the programmers did not think of because they weren't in the specs the same executives signed off on. But you have developers that can read the code, even if they can't write it.

Oh, that's right, you don't have enough flexibility in your schedule to allow for proper review. Make sure the lawyers are on speed-dial.

    1. Outsourcing to an Eastern European company. How did they find this company? I'm guessing Google.
    2. The company specializes in iOS to Android conversions. How do you know? By reading the company's website. And we know that no one can lie on the internet, right?
    3. It's clearly a tight schedule; so the conversion company is not given enough time to get it right; and the VampMobile company does not have enough time to do testing before releasing it.
    4. SOMEONE at VampMobile should have done some basic testing before putting it in the store. If they had, the WTF story would have been more like:

    A) VM hires some Eastern European company they found on the internet to do the conversion. Maybe they were actually competent, maybe not. VM doesn't give them enough time to do a competent job anyway.

    B) VM discovers that the android conversion is crap.

    C) The guy who hired the conversion company is fired.

    D) VM scrambles to find a competent US company to do another conversion. This is done on even a shorter, tighter timeframe, costing 10 times as much as the previous effort.

    E) Now we are finally at the point where the app is put into the store. What do the users think?

That would have been a better story I think.

"Mason awoke in a dark room, alone in a double bed. Where had the romanian girls gone? He tried to remember the afternoon, but all he could muster was a kaleidoscope of very intense, very pleasurable moments. And something involving his neck, but he couldn't put his finger on exactly what. Thinking of that, his neck did hurt. He touched it and came back with what in the moonlight looked liked blood on his fingertips.

He sighed. Probably had drawn a splinter from the old bed. He stood up and tried to switch on the light. Nothing. He sweared. Bloody foreign electricity! When he was dressed, he ventured outside the room. Less light here and even less electricity. He carefully followed down what appeared to be a steep staircase.

Standing in the entrance hall, he could help but feel that the house was not only empty but abandoned. I chill went down his spine.

Then he heard it. Very faint laughter. Very faint, very pleasant laughter. He turned his head this way and that trying to pin the direction it was coming from. It was then that he saw the faint line of light under the cellar door.

Opening it he could hear the laughter more clearly. A longing arouse in his heart and without further thinking he went down the dimly lit and surprisingly long staircase. At their end, a corridor opened to his right. The light was coming from a room at the end of the corridor. He followed the corridor like a sleep walker, his brain getting more and more mushy with every new chime of laughter.

Then he turned a corner and stood at the entrance of the room. Party Animal was there, dancing with the romanian girls. This would normally have triggered a bout of jealousy, but not this time. For his eyes were immediately captured by the woman in the center of the room: leathery skin of deep green with a small glittering crown on the reptile huge head and what looked like a laser gun in her hand. The alien dragon princess!

The alien dragon princess seemed to have sensed his presence; she slowly turned her head, looked at Mason and with a voice to drive a thousand men into madness said: 'Welcome, Mason, to my lair!'
