Yeah. The real WTF is the URL.
No www.WorseThanFailure.de available? :)
Admin
Well working in the so called EDV without understanding English is a bit of wtf too.
Admin
de.WorseThanFailure.com is just a subdomain that you can use for free if you already own WorseThanFailure.com I guess I'm going to read both versions for a while to see which one is better :)
Admin
But knowing some english words like "while", "if", "referrer", "protocol" ... is something completely different than reading whole stories ;)
Admin
No Dutch version??? :'(
Not that I'd care, I would keep reading the English version anyway...
Unless there would be a seperate section for Dutch content, apart from the translated content. Many WTFs will lose their main funfactor in translation, I'm afraid.
Admin
I think it's great to have localised versions of the site, no doubt, but if the localised content is just translated from english - would it not be a better idea to focus on more english material in stead?
Admin
Germans can also produce excellent WTFs. ^^
Admin
Schnieke, Keule! ;)
Admin
Agreed; I hope we get some English translations from the other language sites when they have good stories, too.
Admin
-Must-resist-temptation- . . . . Failed.
Admin
I'll stay with the english version to be honest. Good effort with the translation I guess, but when I read those articles I can't lose the impression they're translated on a word-by-word basis..
Admin
Ach! And here I was hoping that it'd be german WTFs instead of translated ones.
I mean, isn't that the Real WTF (tm) - that apparently there are people working in IT not knowing enough English to understand thedailywtf?
Admin
I might help with the Spanish edition... if those versions are really being made.
Admin
You beat me to it.
So I was wondering, how does "WTF" translate into german?
Admin
Well, I'm sure "what the f***" has found its way into the German language already - all those not speaking "Denglish" would surely prefer "Was zum Geier" ("What the vulture" - ??) or "Was zum Henker" ("What the hangman" - ...)
CAPTCHA: dubya - if I translate this I'll get arrested and transferred to some top secret CIA prison...
Admin
In German you rarely use the F-word to curse so it would most likely be "Was zum Teufel?!" (what the deuce) or harmless "Was zum Geier?" (Geier = vulture). No, I have no idea where the latter comes from. Translations of "Worse Than Failure" are as boring as the English original.
Admin
No, the real WTF is no iPhone coverage on this site! ;)
Admin
sehr schön :)
Admin
Any chance of somehow labelling the original articles, so that they can be easily distinguished from the translated ones?
Admin
Yeah, the obvious choice would be www.arbeitsagentur.de.
Admin
Das reale WTF ist der Mangel an hölzernen Tabellen in Deutschland.
CAPTCHA = Wurst
Admin
I prefer to say "Beim Teutates!". ;-)
Admin
Table/s = Tisch/e ^^
Admin
Ironie-Detektor neu eichen. Jetzt!
Admin
The translation for the english word table depends on the context.
(database) table -> Tabelle (kitchen) table -> Tisch
wooden table -> hölzerner Tisch (or rather Holztisch)
"hölzerne Tabelle" sounds funny, though...
"reale" should rather be "echte" or "wirkliche". "reale" can be used here but it's bad style.
Das echte WTF ist der Mangel an Holztischen in Deutschland.
Admin
Pedantisch ^^
Admin
And just to think that all along I was trying to make the point that translations often lose some of their original meaning, especially when local culture or humour is involved.
Admin
joelonsoftware.com recently added their first non-english version and it's German too. Are the germans trying to take over again? We're watching you!
Admin
Well, now we've got at least one "wooden table" in Germany :)
CAPTCHA: burned (hope not!)
Admin
Will it be in plattdeutsch?
Admin
Admin
Admin
Might as well be written entirely in COBOL for all I understand.
Hmmmm.
"was das Bumsen" as the babel fish reliably informs me ;)
Admin
All your base are belong to us!!!
The Germans
Admin
That's a disadvantage, but no wtf. If someone doesn't know english - that doesn't mean anything, he might still be a brillant programmer. Plus: Why not spend 10 minutes reading the localised WTF instead of spending 15 minutes on reading the english WTF without getting the jokes?
btw: The germans know what WTF means... at least.. those who play counter strike or something ^^
Admin
Can't wait to see how the "Street Name" "WTF" translates to German. Who knows, maybe it'll actually be funny.
Admin
a very good translation is: "botz tausend fickerlatz! (BTF)" - found at Deutsches Wörterbuch von Jacob Grimm und Wilhelm Grimm
nobody says that tho maybe I should start using that...
Admin
Admin
You need to be able to read english. Every data sheet, API documentation, what ever you need is written in english and only few of them are available in nativ language of the programmer. I'm also sure that most of german programmers write their comments in english.
Mal schaun, wie die Kommentare auf de.worsethanfailure.com/ mit denen hier mithalten können.
btw, ich bevorzuge immer noch thedailywtf und finde worsethanfailure eine Verschlechterung.
Admin
So is the German really that close to a google translation? I wouldn't be able to tell.
Admin
Admin
Hmmm - I use the F-word very frequently to curse - and the other guys of the coding department in our company also. If we want to curse politely, we curse "Aaaah Fffffffffffffffffffff...".
A very simple translation of "wtf" would be "hääääääääh ?" or a litte more complex: "Himmelherrgottallmachtsjessessakrament - wasn das schon wieder für 'ne verfickte Scheiße ?!!!" (ok when the boss or a customer is in sight, we curse politely...)
Admin
Movie titles are translated in German. Entire seasons of the A-Team have been dubbed much to everyone's dismay (hey, du Schlaumeier!). It's inconceivable that WorseThanFailure gets away with this subdomain thingy, and no, WurstDennFehler is not an option.
Admin
laut gelacht... :)
Admin
...just don't mention the war!
Admin
But you have to agree that germany is not a country where "few of them are available in native language of the programmer", it's actually quite a lot compared to the netherlands or something.
And still I think there is a difference in reading stories and reading technical documentation.
Admin
I can help with the spanish version.. where do I check in???
Admin
Or, my all-time favorite Babelfish translation:
"Dear friends and fans" -> "Liebe Freunde und Ventilatoren"
