That's the reason I took the ads off http://what-is-what.com as well. I left one small ad at the beginning of each article, that's it. I also uninstalled Adblock at the same time, so I hope to see a push in the right direction.

I never used Adblock specifically so I can give ad revenue to sites I frequent. Ads don't really bother me.

Flash ads and popups, however, piss me off. So I always use a flash blocker and a popup blocker.

    Hi,

Great approach. I visit this site, well, almost daily, and was pleased to see your sane and honest approach. IMHO those adds seem just right, no visible "obnoxious" factor. I actually do click some of them, mainly technical/computer stuff; some of it I was actually glad to find. Keep up the good work :)

  • ebenblues (unregistered)

Adblock Plus allows you to whitelist ads for certain sites only, so you can use adblock, but still support certain sites.

Alex, I disabled adblock for your site. Thanks for actually thinking about the effects of ads on user experience.

    * Text-Only Google Ads - When there's no hand-picked banner ads to display, I'll fill in the gap with text-only ads from Google. While that means that we'll still see things like “Industrial-Strength Steel String”, their algorithm may occasionally pick out a cool product or service.

That's the problem with website advertising. Nobody can grasp the concept that a dozen bouncing, moving, flashing adverts is so distracting that you can't focus on the sites content, which is the only reason you go to a site in the first place. Thank goodness for Adblock.

No, I think they understand it and to them it's a win. They WANT you to be completely distracted by the ad. That means you are looking at it and could possibly click it.

    Yes, marketers = pure evil

I run abp but I pick and chose what I block. Yesterday I came extremely close to blocking your top banner, so I think your post is quite timely. I've noticed problems with ads for a while now and I praise you for addressing it. Thanks.

  • TRWTF Troll (unregistered)

The real WTF here is that there are more TDWTF readers then there are celebrities and scientologists combined.

Though, seriously, I have added TDWTF to my ABP whitelist (the first site to ever achieve such a distinction). however if I start seeing a massive number of animated ads I will probably start blocking again.

What about doing donation advertising? I don't know if it exists, but maybe ads for the RedCross and such... its not money but it could be used as a tax write off by you.

    So:

handpicked adds donation adds google text adds

There has to be something out there, you can pretty much donate everything else these days.

  • Chucara (unregistered)

Thanks a lot, jackass - now where will I get my Pokémon cursors? Thta was the sole reason I visited the site. You just lost a customer!

  • TroelsL (unregistered)

I think your ads need more animation and color. I love that ad where the robot chases your cursor and moves in front of the text you're actually reading.. Do that! No wait! TWO of those!

Oh, and if you could have the background change colors every few seconds so we'd be able to see the ads no matter what color they were that'd be great too.

Seriously though, I hadn't noticed the ads (because I have Adblock Plus), but I do remember the one in the articles being in the way, while the others weren't so bad.

Turns out whitelisting this site is really easy, so congrats on being the only site on my whitelist.

For those interested to know, you just right click the ABP logo at the top right corner of your screen. (Next to the google search field)

  • James (unregistered)

I think the rough rationale behind the christmas add is that christmas is scheduled a day or two before the winter solstice to precede pagan celebrations. While I live in the US, I actually know that the winter solstice is coming up for people in the southern hemisphere. Or it could be for one of the 5 people who do their shopping before the annual cattle drive.

I like your Venn Diagram; it really clears up misconceptions I had about your readership. I think it was prepared by the same person that made the so-called IQ test though. In addition to the Scientologist from Omaha that will be commenting soon, I must complain that you have two sectional enlargements that are both labeled '100X Zoom'. I looked at the pixels and they are definitely different zoom levels. I know because I have seen alot of pixels before.
