    KFC?

For those who arn't aware: In the states there was a resturant chain called "Kentucky Fried Chicken" which served fried chicken (who'd have guessed!). When eating healthy started to become a big thing, someone decided that having the word "fried" in your name was probably a bad thing, so they changed their name to "KFC".

Wrong, and here's the link that lists the name change, yet again:

    http://www.snopes.com/lost/kfc.htm

I hate to burst your bubble, but that article is part of the "Lost Legends" section of Snopes, which... well, let's just say, try clicking on the "More information about this page" link at the bottom of that article.

In short, nyaah nyaah, you fell for it.

It has nothing to do with fear. It has to do with courtesy, and a good upbringing. My mother taught me manners.

My idea would have been to give the site TWO NAMES!! Show the "The Daily WTF" logo for www.thedailywtf.com and the "Worse Than Failure" logo for www.worsethanfailure.com.

Ofcourse, the website www.thedailywtf.com would replace all text "Worse Than Failure" to "The Daily WTF" and www.worsethanfailure.com would replace the text vice versa.

I was gonna post to suggest that exact same thing!

  • Larry Sheldon (unregistered)

    "letatio"

Is that something naughty, or is that a new Starbucks offering?

    Anyhoo...the important question is:

How come I only got one set of stickers out of all of that?

Reminds me of years (eons?) ago when I was part of a Project to mechanize the telephone directory by capturing the data from service orders via massive changes to the Billing and Collecting system.

Some of the early-in-the-daily-process edits were installed to scrub the data on its way to the existing Master Files (what we called databases then). These runs re-processed data that had already posted to see what kinds of errors needed to be dealt with at Conversion.

This added processing was called an Accounting Method, Utilizing Control (everything involving computers was a feature of Accounting (Revenue Accounting, in this case) --my title as a programmer was Methods Accountant).

So. Somebody calling one of the nine computer rooms in the system ("computer room" is what we called "Data Centers" in those days--the ones with petroglyphs were called "Caves") might inquire "what are y'all doing?" and get the answer "Why, we are running AMUC!"

I think you've broken the redirects with all these changes. My old bookmark for www.worsethanfailure.com goes in a loop.

http://www.worsethanfailure.com Redirects to: http://www.worsethanfailure.com/Default.aspx Which redirects to itself forever.. so people who didn't see the name change are probably confused.

This new, new, new name will obviously fail like all of the previous ones because it is not enterprisey enough. In all of your explanation of the failure of the previous names I saw no real acknowledgement of the problems of using your new, new, new name in the kind of worldwide, multi-location, multi-vendor, multi-OS, multi-database world we live in today.

  • Phoenix (unregistered)

What's wrong with using both the Original Name and the New Name? Like the previous poster said, spelling WTF out as "Worse Than Failure" allows some people to use this site in a family-friendly way, while the rest of us may prefer the shorter WTF (and supply our own "unofficial" meaning).

So, you still have both domain names, right? You can have the same content on both sites. You could even set it up to display different logos depending on which domain is being used.

Considering your audience, you could probably get a lot of help setting this up, if you need it. ^_^

I do hope that you've fully defined the requirements and specifications of the process improvement process. Without a full suite of monitoring and performance metrics, the process improvement process will fail in the same way that the site renaming process failed.

For this reason, I'd like to better understand your processes for monitoring the site rename process improvement process, as well as the process for dealing with any deviations in the site renaming process improvement process monitoring process.

I also recognize that there will be a large amount of data to process in the site renaming process improvement process monitoring process contingency process, and I would like you to know that I am available to help you with the site renaming process improvement process monitoring process contingency process data processing process development if you find yourself shorthanded.

Please advise us of your progress on these processes.

It seems after two+ years (Member since 2005-12-07 Last visted 2006-09-27, has it really been that long?) the real WTF is still the forum software.

What's wrong with using both the Original Name and the New Name?

Indeed. I've used this technique to support multiple userspaces with slightly different requirements on a single server with a single codebase. Each userspace gets its own hostname, pointing at the codebase. The code produces relative URLs. The code tests for the hostname portion of the URL it was called as, and can provide configurable behaviors (including trivial things like logos) based on the hostname.

You end up with one codebase transparently supporting two or more sites. Depending on requirements, you might either merge or partition the data (in this case, article and comments).
