Incorrect usage of "whomever", it should be "whoever". :) "The person" is the subject of the sentence, whereas "the servers" is the object. If you're gonna go out of your way to use "whom", at least get it right :) (Yes, I'm a grammar nazi.)

Quick way to pick the right word: change

    Whomever set up the servers...
    to
    Him set up the servers...

and see if it makes sense.

Yep that's what I did. Did him set up the servers? Of course him did! :D

The whole forest, unpaved roads, etc. bit sounds very much like the Conroe that is just north of Houston (which has no small amount of tech activity, and yes no small amount of really stupid tech activity). Now I'm wondering where this bunker data center is if it is here in Texas and what they charge...

Dues to the use of the word "forest" I took it to be some place in Europe. I don't know too many US citizens who say forest. Forest makes me think of Europe for some reason. Deep dark forests, full of unicorns, and witches.

Sorry to shatter your illusions - but before you spend a lot of money on coming here to Europe to see this you better get a reality check. Here goes:

    • Deep dark forests: not so deep and dark anymore thanks to acid rains.
    • Witches: Got mostly burned in the Middle Ages by the Inquisition. Contemporary ones ... like an drained empty bottle.
    • Unicorns: Dunno. Never seen one ... maybe they got eaten or something. Or try Wales.

Classic. If "The Daily WTF" ever gets it's own TV series this should be an episode.

The real WTF is that if this was less than five or so years ago (as hinted by the "biohazard" gamer case), why didn't he go to Fry's (or even Altex) instead of CompUSA? The first Houston Fry's is on that side of Houston, though the I-45 construction of recent years would have made for a painful drive to Conroe.

Yeah, okay, so he didn't know he was going to Conroe at first, but that's still no excuse for trying to build a server out of stuff at CompUSA.

And for those of y'all who think Texas is just open plains and desert, this is east Texas, where the default terrain is pine forests. The trees don't stop at the Louisiana state line, y'know.

What sterotypes? Texas is known for fat, intolerant, & less than educated god fearing people. ;-)

OK, there's a marketing video on the westlin site now that shows pictures of the bunker....don't think it's anywhere near the one in the beginning of this story.

They just posted a link up to the ground breaking ceremony for expansion of the buildings and datacenter....this is definitely not the place they were talking about in the beginning!

not really cool to fire people because they are sick. mentally ILL. It is an illness that is not any different than cancer, pneumonia, whatever.

One difference is, cancer doesnt really affect your capability to do your work until in its later stages. And it sure doesnt decide to kill some guy thats annoying it by holding his coffe mug the wrong way.

Mentally ill people tend to be a tad unreliable, as in throwing things at others, using physical force to get their will thru and all that wonderful stuff that SO improves worker morale.

Not all mentally-ill people are violent (unlike a security systems programmer I once did business with). I have a very creative, highly-intelligent friend who is schizophrenic. No violence, etc. But unless her medication level is right, she can't think coherently for more than a few sentences at a time ...
