    I see what's going on there - facebook is forwarding captcha images to its users so that their automated crawlers can break through the captcha test on some system that they are trying to crack. It all makes sense now.

    Google uses recaptcha to digitalize books.

    i.e. you get one word that was detected before an one yet undetected.

    You provide first class OCR for the second word and are let in if you get the already OCRed word correct.

    So don't worry if you mistype the harder to read word .. you will still be let in!

    If you feel instrumentalized by robots? Don't feel bad its only training for the sunny Skynet future!

Greek or Cyrillic letters are one thing but some time ago they must have fed their system a number of science papers which introduced the internet users to the joys of entering mathematical symbols in textboxes. It never worked for me. Maybe I should have entered it as LaTeX formula...

Which means you get sucky "keyboard" encoding of text that could (and arguably should) have been Unicode encoded.

    Protip: You only need to give one of the words to reCAPTCHA. Normally if the word contains numbers, symbols, text in a different font etc. you can just mash the keyboard for and it will accept it. Recently the word which has the same word overlapped and rotated is the one it wants.

    Well, of course they do. I don't even recognize all those weird little squiggles you guys use on your letters. How do you expect me to type them when 1) I don't know what they are, and 2) they are not on my keyboard?

    Of course, the alternative option (of not having any re-captcha data at all to work with) remains available to you. But if you want to use the idea of re-captcha, the problem is unavoidable. NOBODY recognizes all the characters represented in unicode, and unicode contain at least one pair of characters that NOBODY can distinguish (U+03A9 and U+2126; capital omega and ohms) because the glyphs are identical.

    b.t.w. When your nationality is the one indicated by the A in ASCII, unicode often looks like TRWTF.

    Hey, the discussion of recaptcha gives me a thought. The whole idea is that the recaptcha folks harness millions of Internet users to do their OCR work for them, right? Well, why stop there? We should create web pages where in order to submit a forum post, you have to type in a portion of a program that the site owner needs written, or add a paragraph to a Wikipedia article on a subject that you are knowledgeable about. A student web site could require you to write a brief essay comparing and contrasting the ideals of Jacksonian Democracy and Hamiltonian Democracy. Etc.

    I'm weird like that. Sometimes I spend a half hour filling out the sample captcha on the reCAPTCHA website for no reason. In fact, I'm gonna go do that now.

    Given how reCaptcha works, it's enough to get one word right. Or just enter asdfasdf and you'll get a fresh one. But you know what, switching keyboard layouts or typing Unicode key combos is fun and a good memory exercise. Knowing how to type in Cyrillic or Hebrew and memorizing the codepoints for the most frequent Latin-extended letters is a good skill to have if you care about any language other than English.

    I will grant your point, insomuch as reCAPTCHA's goal is likely not encoding for historical accuracy, but rather readability. However, in the example you provided, the use of a long S (in English) is largely a stylistic choice.

    Compare a different example: "4⇐y". There was naturally little other context, but I doubt this meant the same when "corrected" to "4<=y", or "4<-y", or whatever else users came up with.

    You're hearing seemingly up to a dozen audio streams at a time, distorted with some multi-tap reverb. It's very much illegible and useless. How would it help anyone is beyond my imagination. It's a slap in the face for disabled people more than anything.
