I love it when reCaptcha gives me words with strange symbols in it. Greek or Cyrillic letters are one thing but some time ago they must have fed their system a number of science papers which introduced the internet users to the joys of entering mathematical symbols in textboxes. It never worked for me. Maybe I should have entered it as LaTeX formula...

I've listened to it several times until I got it: just filter out the voice with slightly different pitch and compare that to the known number words. Really hard for humans, but should be pretty easy for modern sound processors.

Yes, this is where reCAPTCHA is annoying. When encountering a symbol or non-native character, pretty much every user types in whatever keyboard character they think it looks most like. Which means you get sucky "keyboard" encoding of text that could (and arguably should) have been Unicode encoded.
I got a reCAPTCHA that used the old ſ=s. I debated over if I should have typed "outermost" instead of "outermoſt"
I will grant your point, insomuch as reCAPTCHA's goal is likely not encoding for historical accuracy, but rather readability. However, in the example you provided, the use of a long S (in English) is largely a stylistic choice.

Compare a different example: "4⇐y". There was naturally little other context, but I doubt this meant the same when "corrected" to "4<=y", or "4<-y", or whatever else users came up with.

(Maybe this was your point, and I missed it.) You have to keep in mind that although a side-effect of the captcha is digitizing text, it may still be reused for another captcha.

We will all laugh when outmoft ends up in the digital book, but if it's more likely for other people to use 'f' instead of 's', then perhaps 'f' is more appropriate. Then again, why do we care that we help someone?

Why they still use that Captcha crap is beyond me. It doesn't keep 100% of the bots out, just like it doesn't let 100% of the humans in. If you'd just put an empty textfield with a label like "Don't fill this in" or something (so blind folks' screen reader will inform blind people to ignore it), then hide that with CSS and test on it being filled in during form validation, you'll weed out about as many bots as with Captchas while not bothering a single human being. It would still be open to specialized bots, but so are Captchas.

But yeah, that'd be too easy, right?

Facebook should make their captcha appear only when they have a high probability of seeing a bot. At ATMCash.com we've developed a script that by collecting various parameters determines whether a captcha should even be shown.
