    I grant you, if you're using a website for a digital art community, and have uploaded an image purporting to be some piece of quality work but have saved it as a JPEG with a lot of compression, then that would be a wtf.

    However, these are screenshots of mistakes made on incredibly mundane websites, posted to a website devoted to mundane mistakes. There is no loss in the viewers appreciation of these mistakes due to JPEG artifacts.

    So, lossy compression is completely appropriate, and in fact encouraged, so that these mundane jokes take up less space. Especially because no-one is going to read this page after a couple of weeks, why should a screenshot of an error message spend the rest of eternity clogging up a hard drive for no good reason?

    In addition, consider the primary usage of MSPaint; to make a shit image very quickly. Why would you want in any higher quality? Since JPEG is supported by pretty much EVERYTHING, whereas GIF is totally shite, and PNG is only supported by MOST things, it makes sense for it to default to JPEG.

    So there.

    In the iTunes screenshot, I'm not sure what the "Numbers" app has to do with the WTF. It's just Apple's spreadsheet app. The WTF is step 7 of 6 (and the fact that she never syncs her device - 89 apps to sync!?!)

    What's wrong with that? Obviously the programmer followed the time honoured tradition of duplication the noun to symbolize depth of levels. Like, foobar.bak.bak.bak and the glorious BaseBaseSomething class.

    So we have a crash.crash.crash message, which tells me that the original crash triggered two more crashes on it's way up but occurred two catch-clauses below the one that's displaying the nice box. Wherever "two catch-clauses below" may be :-)

    Well, obviously, since the Kindle edition is not due for another 22 years.

    But kudos to amazon: I was always a bit worried that buying a Kindle would leave me stranded with obsolete hardware some years from now; I am not worried any more - planning a release date that far into the future means amazon is serious about that device.

    For me there was. It's almost as bad as looking at text with bad kerning.

    Most screenshots are smaller when saved as png instead of jpeg, unless you use jpeg with very high and lossy compression or big parts of your screenshot are actually a photograph.

    279 KB for JPEG, 369 KB for a PNG screenshot on my computer. In our era of GB for pennies, I don't think we need to save 90 KB that badly.

    It isn't 2001. We don't have to support IE 6 anymore.

    I was going to be a pedantic asshole and take a screenshot on my phone then compare and contrast different formats and compressions. But when I tried it I found that my phone saves its screenshots as JPG. It's nowhere near as badly artifacted as the one here, but it ruins a good nitpicking rant. It leaves me feeling all empty inside.

    The fun part of the survey WTF is that apparently all of the answers to "Lorem ipsum dolor?" lie somewhere on a spectrum from Status to Quality. I'm not sure why Status and Quality are diametrically opposed, but it's nice to know that the majority of people prefer slightly more Quality than Status in their lorem ipsum.

    As seen by the fact that the results are not a true bell-curve, but have upward tips at the end. This is the result of showing people a bell-curve. A few people pick the end points because of some form of weird sympathy or a desire to be unique.

    I beg to differ. The 43 and 9 percent in the middle shows that people like to hit submit with the slider in the default position. The end points are simply because if you grab that slider with the mouse and slam it to the left or the right, you end up at the end. Laziest possible options get chosen first. Its also possible that some people prefer "Status" while others simply prefer "Quality".

    TRWTF is that 1703 people responded to it.
