    Terrific, Astonishing, Awe-inspiring -- the only thing that could make it better would be if it were written in Javascript..

    oh wait.. it is written in Javascript...

    I got nothing..

    WTF? Perl code that I can actually understand at first glance? What is the world coming to?

    Alex Papadimoulis:
    Naturally, the system had no form of engineering. No development methodology was employed. No source control was used. No unit testing was performed. No code reviews were performed. It'd be hard to even imagine how much of a mess this system was.

    Unfortunately it isn't hard to image at all since I am in this hell every day... Sadly it doesn't seem to change though I've complained like a mad dog with some sort of yelling disease.

    cow-erkers?!?

    Well, it should be "cow-orkers", and I'm not sure if you were questioning the spelling or the meaning.   A "cow-orker" is a "'dumb-as-a-cow' co-worker"

    Well, the thing is that, as long as I was being liberal with the hyphenation, I might as well be creative with the spelling, WTF does it matter right? :)

    smitty, you do realize that the OP was not asking for information about SS, he was pointing out an amusing typo - right?

    Now, when a question is posed about Socialist Security, and the response proffered is a Wikipedia link to Ponzi schemes, how would you characterize that response, Sir Sarchasm? :)

    At least here where i live the last 4 digits are computed from the previous your sex and where you were born ...

    As opposed to "the future" or "the present" your sex...so if you have a sex-change operation your SSN changes? Or if you have more or less sex?

    This may actually become a problem in the future; most European countries now allow transexuals to ammend the gender on their birth certs, passports etc; no doubt the US will eventually follow suit...

    While I can't speak for our anonymous, sarcastic friend, I personally can't really verify the response of Wikipedia wrapped in link tags:

    Wikipedia

    as being anything other than smartassed.

    However, as it appears the ultimate intent being a link to Wikipedia's entry on Ponzi schemes, then yes, I would indeed characterize that as sarcasm in its' most perfect form

    Actually, the more I think about it.  Social Security is a Ponzi scheme with a twist that as long as enough people die, the base doesn't have to expand indefinitely.

    So I'm not so sure it is sarchasmic or sarcastic, for that matter.

    I saw some similar code once:

    (pseudo-code shown)

    if (ssn == "111-11-1111") raise error;

    if (ssn == "222-22-2222") raise error;

    if (ssn == "444-44-4444") raise error;

    The "developer" forgot the "333-33-3333" in the sequence! Their terrible code wasn't only awful, it was wrong!

    Maybe that was the social security number for their test account

    wow, nice WTF.

    Not sure about anyone else but my SSN is only 9 numbers, not 10...so my SSN would fail this check [Y]

    Huh?  It checks each index 0 through 8 sequentially: the interval [0,8] contains 9 whole numbers, not 10.

  • (cs) in reply to bitvector

    The original post had [0] through [9] - it has since been corrected.

    Actually, birth certificates are a state, not federal, responsibility. The only "pattern" I am aware of within the SSN system is that the first three digits indicate place of issuance (for example, the low 400's are usually in Tennessee, while Georgia numbers are in the mid-200's.)

  • (cs) in reply to nonDev

    Those familiar with David Langford's short story "BLIT" will understand when I say that this approaches being a source-code Basilisk. Someone pass me the brain eraser...
