The sticker says "upto" 40 degrees cooler. That is an upper bound and likely makes sense. If it is 100 degrees outside then the inside of a car can easily reach 120 degrees without the windows down. With the shades, it is believable that the inside will be 80 degrees.

If you still believe the lower 7c is correct then google search car shades a bit and you'll see the 40f thrown around more than this one pic.

24K cooler? They're being very very optimistic. I can't imagine it being that effective.

Maybe not, but 24K ought to be enough for everyone.

How is it believable that the inside can be kept lower than the outside? Do they have a built in air-conditioning system or something?

Do you believe in Korean fan death too?

    Nice.

If the outside temperature increased over time (it usually does throughout a day) the inside of a car can stay cooler than the outside. Do you believe that an ice chest requires an air conditioner to work?

  • (disco) in reply to Nprz

Ice chests are insulated better and don't have windows, unlike cars?

I live in the desert. Ground temperatures in areas getting direct sunlight all day can be in excess of 200F degrees. Ground temperatures in areas that are SHADED all day, a short distance away, are below 80F degrees. That's a 120F degree difference (or 67C degrees). I could EASILY rig-up a not-so-fair test that would show a sun-shade making vastly more of a temperature difference than they're advertising here.

Everyone should own an infrared thermometer!

Past a few days, yes. (Substitute "air conditioner" with "refrigeration unit" since they are essentially the same) Cars are not well insulated.

There is a lag before equalisation of temperatures, yes. That is convection transmission. But there's this thing called a "sun" that adds heaps of heat to any system exposed to it. That is radiation transmission. The sort of person buying sun shades does not live near the poles so the sun shining on the vehicle will increase temperature even with shading. Sun shades would not add anything of it is already in the shade.

I live in the driest inhabited continent on earth. I've seen eggs being fried on car dashes.

What is the air temperature? There's no way the inside of a car will be below this without active cooling.

How near to the poles do you have to get for sun shades to be non-useful?

Datapoint: they're useful in the UK on the few days when we get significant sunshine. Yes, the car still heats up, but nothing like as much as it does if you don't put shades up. It's the difference between “unpleasant until the AC has run for a few minutes” and “O!M!G! HOT!”

Shades are rather handy in snowy environments since the snow reflects so much light. [image] O look these guys are in Antarctica and they have cool shades!
