    You're gambling whether you're going to be with them for more or less than 10 months. If more than 10 months, you save money by paying a chunk up from for "setup fee".

    I also don't see the problem with the hosting one. It seems you can opt to pay a setup fee, in which case they knock 10% of that setup fee off your monthly bill. Gosh, incentivizing customers to stay long-term without actually making them sign a complex contract with termination fees and all...WTF, indeed!

    1. as far as I know this is from someone's computer while they're debugging... which is a reasonable place to see these errors
    2. Not a WTF. You get a discount if you pay a lot up front... big effin' deal.

    What they're telling you is that if you pay $150 setup fee, then your monthly fee will be $15/month less. The more you pay upfront, the less your monthly fee will be. My hosting service does the same thing.

    It does after 10 months. What's the problem? You save some money if you pay upfront. It would be stupid if it was pay $180 and we'll not off $15/month, unless the discount continued into the second year (which isn't clear from the screen shot).

    I, too, see nothing wrong with the "setup fee" one, other than calling it a "setup free". Think of it more as a "one-time payment to join our discounted monthly fee plan". (Or like "points" on a mortgage.) After the 10th month, you save money.

    Of course, the service may be so bad that you cancel long before then. :-)

    That's exactly what it is. To answer an earlier poster, the discount does not end, ever. It's fairly standard in the hosting industry, although admittedly poorly worded. And we provide excellent service, so I don't think you'll be cancelling so soon.

    Apparently if you introduce an incomplete feature (like Tip-Of-The-Day) into your in-house application and then post it, you'll have better luck.

    Well good on you if you can get 20% APR from a savings account in this economy. Not to mention that in the second year you'd be saving a cool $180. And another $180/year for each year after that.

    Sure, but if you cancel after 10 months, you'd break even compared to the no setup cost option. Unless the service is really tragically bad, I think it'd take more than 10 months to really fairly assess whether or not their service is up to scratch.

    Technically it would only be about an 18% APR, since most accounts are compounded daily. It would be a 20% APY.

    But, your point stands, Steve-O's comment was just idiotic, and as you said, since you're "making" $180 each year after the first, the APY keeps going up each year (70% after 2 years...)

    Exactly, they look sane to me, the savings is a discount on a monthly rate (not listed).

    For a $350.00 up front fee your first year total cost would be $70.00 less then a $0.00 up front fee - paying for itself.

    Year 2 and on would be $420.00/yr less then they would have otherwise been.

    The "no setup fee" option is only worth it for a total engagement of less then 10 months, or if you are lacking start-up capital.

    You may well have been, but if anyone would trust a testimonial from you, I'd question their judgement.
