What's going on with the telephone one? It makes no sense to me, should I be able to read that text?
It's been a long week, so sorry if this is a dumb question.
Admin
ATI. 'nuff said.
Admin
As for Firebug, all you need to do is press F12 and you'll know soon enough as to whether it's installed or not.
Admin
TRWTF of course is UCSD: they've got a picture of some guy with a very nasty-looking piece of metal in his hand, with a view, apparently, to throwing it. That is very dangerous -- he'll have someone's eye out if he's not careful. We should not be encouraging our youth to participating in such appallingly unsafe practices. Can't they change it to a picture of a decorously-dressed lady playing the piano, or something?
Admin
I was wondering the same. Maybe it's because the things in the yellow boxes look like xml (is that not enough). Or it's the emergency exit plan on the bottom right corner which looks so confusing that most people will be incinerated before understanding it.
Admin
For the uninitiated the telephone error is the default error screen for a .net website. Setting custom errors to Off would give a detailed error as the error screen simply says theres been an error.
Admin
It's a shame that the 0x0 option is grayed out, because I just happen to have a 0x0 monitor right over... oh no, where'd it go?!
Admin
Good one!!

If only 9,468 people like Arthur Beren's shoes, and 160,131 people like dice, perhaps Arthur Beren should stop making shoes and start making dice instead?

An Excel WTF? Blasphemy! Time to get out my torch and pitchfork!
Admin
TRWTF is of course UCSD: using for their logo a picture of someone taken from a Disney cartoon.

Eww -- that's gross! Why would a mermaid run away with her grandfather? Besides I know you're talking rubbish because there's no such thing as mermaids. The IPU told me.

Windows 8 looks like they were going for the Windows 1.0 look and feel.
Admin
Let's just agree that on the phone surpasses WTF-ery into true horror.
I mean sure, it's bad if data/error messages don't display, monitor sizes are wrong in a list, and all the other errors we've seen over the years.
But no beer and wings? Definition of tragedy.

Is it just me or does anyone else find the trend towards less informative error messages disturbing? In the Firefox one "cannot modify the needed file" really begs the question of what the "needed file" is. Was it too hard for them to provide a filename, at least?
Admin
TRWTF is that first caption - I'm not a professor - just a graduate student in Pharma! The correct term of address would be Mr. Error, but I'm pretty laid back, so you can just call me 551 in class.

Yeah I don't like the "dumbed down" error messages. I'm working with SharePoint 2013 now and the default error message if there's an error is literally, "Sorry, something went wrong" with a link for a correlation ID for admins. Come on, at least tell me what went wrong so I know where to start, without having to pull all the logs.
Admin
For cygwin the services are not standard windows services. You will need to check the appropriate logs to determine the cause. You are looking at a generic windows error code otherwise.
Admin
Whoa, never expected to see a Zelda II shoutout here.
Admin
Glad you asked! http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/p/30077/348441.aspx#348441
Admin
Quite, cygwin/ssh didn't start, but the unhelpful error message comes from windows.
Admin
Note to Akismet: No, this is not spam. I am not promoting anything. You can't by anything at the target of the link (at least, not that I know off). It's just a humerous link. Enough?
Admin
i hate this website it is stuipd

Our online course management system was called "Neptun". In that system seeing that the instructor of the class was "ERROR" was a good sign, because it meant that at least you could log in.

Can't see a problem with #2.

Living across the street from UCSD (my fiancee is about to defend her thesis there), I can tell you that there are many WTFs at the school. Number one being that it's mostly the kids of rich Asians from Los Angeles/Orange County that have overly-demanding parents, so pretty much every kid in that school cheats.
Having the Triton as their mascot ranks as only the top 11th or 12th WTF there.

Cool, I got a similar error message when Firebug was updating one time.

Excel is the only good software Microsoft has ever prudoced.
This post spell-checked by Excel.

Which costs less -- a 0x0 monitor or write-only memory?

Do you know Bagu?

Looks like Neethan P. accidentally more than one word.

Sometimes when I try to open Firefox, I get "Could not open Firefox because Firefox could not find the file."
Thanks, guys.

That Cygwin image reminds me of another error'd I saw in Pop-up Potpourri: Mayday Edition.
[image]Since it's the same program name it's clear to me that this is actually a Windows WTF.

Well, I have a 1x1 monitor on my keychain...
Admin
WHere do you buy that junk?
Admin
This ATI drivers are old, but on modern AMD system you could create arbitrary large virtual display using bezel compensation.
Admin
The Real WTF with the .NET error is not having a custom error page enabled for a production system.
It has instructions on how to turn off the generic message and show the actual error. It says which config XML nodes to edit.Admin

When an error happens, the user can potentially do three things: 1. Accept that it doesn't work. 2. Call for help. 3. Fix the problem themselves. It depends on the error and capabilities of the user which one to do.
When designing an error message, you need to decide what you want to achieve. "Cannot modify the needed file" is neither here nor there. It confuses the user who cannot fix the problem himself, and it doesn't help anyone who tries to fix the problem.
Admin
The problem in Firefox should be easy to debug with Firebug.
Admin
One of the frustrations is support is that people think they understand every problem they encounter - and the more information you give them, the more they think they can diagnose it - and (even though I have a bad habit of doing it) it really isn't helpful when the user reporting the problem speculates on the underlying issue - other than to mention when they've seen a similar issue.
Admin
"The service did not report an error."
The RWTF is attributing a 'net' command message to the Cygwin environment. I mean ... really?!?!? Who's running this forum anyway?
