OMG, that reminds me of a similar story, but worse.

A customer called into tech support reporting that their machine was crashing a lot, and maybe they needed a new cpu board, since running diagnostics indicated that the cpu board was bad.

after sending tech out, they opened the case and found the machine full of white powder!

They had remodeled the inside of their datacenter without protecting the machine in any way. doh!

    (white powder = drywall dust)

(Trying to play the devil's advocate) If the "customer" hired the absolute cheapest contractor available (who was allowed to do the job without a "bond" read: insurance) and the contractor used illegal immigrants who had little or no construction experience, then, yes -- anything goes.

How did "illegal immigrants" get in that hypothetical?  What changes by substituting the word "people" for the phrase "illegal immigrants" or vice versa?  I am not normally a cop for political correctness, being somewhat notorious for using foul language and even fouler metaphors on public forums, but this really jumps out at me.  This really feels offensive to me.

    It sounds like you've had a bad day to me, but here goes;

I was replying to savar who said:

    >>"I used to live in Atlanta, and I think I can explain this. You see, in Atlanta, much of the day-labor for things like gardening, construction, etc. is provided by transitory workers from other countries. So if you have a construction crew of 8 and on a particular day you think you need 12, you go down to Home Depot and you pick up 4 workers, hopefully one of whom speaks English and can be the liason to the other 3.

Do you understand how I came up with "Illegal Immigrants," now? You see, HE SAID "Workers from other countries" AND "hopefully one of whom speaks English" (hint) in order to be LEGAL, one must speak english. Plus, try watching the evening news.

'site to see' wondering if this was some sort of intentional pun?

    site <> sight.

I'm assuming the problem was vibration, not pressure.

     That is NOT true.

Personally, I usually go with Porter & Cable hard drives. Those will do the job for you.

No, this was back when the College of Computing was moving from the Rich Building (which they shared with OCS/OIT) to the building they're in now  (originally called AECAL, and then renamed the College of Computing building). This was 1990/1991ish.

The Real WTF is that the contractors were allowed in the same room as the servers, or the other way around, without the two sets of people talking to each other about how to keep computers and buildings both working!

Yes, but it happens.  We had to expand our server room.  There was no other place to put the servers during the expansion.  We couldn't turn them off because then 70 people would have no way to work. The contractor assured us (danger, danger, Will Robinson!) that they had worked around computers before, and would "drape" the racks so that they wouldn't overheat and so that dust wouldn't get in.

    Yeah.

It mostly worked.  I think we only had overheat alarms a couple of times.

Ha ha, I still meet people who think that a computer is the monitor.

And there are still people that refer to the base unit as the hard drive...annoys the shizzle out of me.

I've done construction to pay my way through school and I can understand the use of something other than a skillsaw.  More often than not another cowerker is using the only skillsaw because my employer is a cheap bastard and won't buy us anything he can get away with not buying.  I have resorted to using a reciprocating saw in place of a skillsaw when only a rough cut is needed.  The thing tears through the wood with a great deal of forceful vibration.  It would easily cause damage to a server in a rack that was not bolted down or secured in another manner.

How......why.......THEY LET THEM WORK AROUND THE SERVER!!!!!??????

This can only be blamed on the idiot who let them work unsupervised and uninformed near the "saw horse".

In defense of those "nerds" you refer to, most of them don't use power tools.  This is like calling me a meathead because I can hardly code.  Some of us don't have the advantage of being a self absorbed lardass throwing insults around like you.

Sometimes insurance companies (i.e. Geico, Progressive) that insure you over the phone will give you an INITIAL quote, which sounds pretty good. But then they'll look up your record and that quote will change. So be sure the prices you're getting are the exact price you're paying when you sign on that dotted line, i had checked www.oneshopinsurance.com to see current insurance companies price its just sad that progressive still quotes me way too high...

I would say no way, but I know better now. I hope the contractor paid for the drives, and the tech.

How - one low-level peon eye-witness does not cut it when it comes to money disputes.

The WTF is that they let builders/facility maintenance staff work unsupervised in their data-center.

Wow I'm a GT student... I'm just glad it wasn't a student doing this. That would have been so much fail.
