Hey, I remember the "should not see me" dialog. That thing scared the crap out of me back in the day but it was just some dumb message in a poorly coded bit of XP. I hate it when software developers assume a window/dialog isn't going to be seen because they're usually wrong.

The bigger question is, if it's never going to be shown anyway, WHY IN GODS NAME DOES IT EXIST?

Tim Dallmann's survey is sorted alphabetically, left-to-right.

There's method to its madness but it still sucks!

  • (cs)

The number of employees one is sorted just fine. In ASCII string order, though, not integer order, and it's read as: 1 2 3 4 5 6 ...

    And not 1 x 2 x+1 3 x+2 ...

Apparently, the Tim Dallmann comment is organized in Lexigraphical order.

This is reminiscent of an online test my son was taking in College. The professor(s) used an application that would randomize the multiple choice questions. The trouble is that if you had a "All of the above" or "None of the above" answer there was a good chance it would NOT be the last one on the list.

At least it's perfectly honest. American politicians don't really care what you want; they just want to find out who agrees with them and vilify the rest.

It's clear that the developer sorted the options by string value, and displayed them in a 2-column format.

Perfectly reasonable thing to do- make sure that people can find things alphabetically. Except that most people think of the answer as a number.

Just be thankful that they didn't perl::eval() the string and come up with "-49" for the 1 - 50 answer.

Now that would be plain evil, we can't have that can we ;-)

There is literally no end to the evilness you can do with a Perl::eval() on a poorly sanitized string ... (unless you use taint mode, but then you wouldn't do the eval on the unsanitized string)

I'm presuming this is the "oh crap, something has gone horribly, horribly wrong and I don't know what". Which should be a sign to shutdown/reset as gracefully as you can manage.

I'm confused, it was only the string that wasn't supposed to be seen, not the dialog. Presumably other text was supposed to replace the test string before display and that didn't go exactly according to plan.
