Maybe he wasn't using a US keyboard... There's nowhere written where this story comes from.

my old keyboard had intermittent key failures, but i discovered that i could get the key to work by simultaneously pressing the key above or below it. for example, if "X" would not work i could type "SX" then delete the "S".
