You're from Pittsburgh? I've been trying to move back there, but haven't found a job yet.

  • (cs)

I can only echo these sentiments, being able to tell a complex technical story in a comprehensible form is an often overlooked and neglected, but in fact key ability for any developer. (And scientist for that matter, but that's a different story.)

  • (cs) in reply to James

It's a really good time to be looking for a job in Pittsburgh, honestly. There are like a bazillion tech companies lurking in the shadow of CMU's incubator. Plus you've got the ol' manufacturing companies- US Steel, PPG and Westinghouse are great if you can handle some bureaucracy. Much the same for health care- UMPC and Highmark are pretty big employers.

  • (cs)

"a complex technical topic and explain it simply. "

You are doing wrong, and that is a major disservice to all the blood sucking bottom feeding corporate whore consultants. The proper process is

"a simple topic obfuscated with a technically complex explanation"

  • Darren (unregistered)

lol that's a funny article today. Trying to sell storytelling lessons to IT people...yeah right. The article wasn't finished though, tell me what happened to salesman...did no one turn up at the workshops?

    Storytelling?

Pay money to learn how to write like this?

"From the site that brings you the adventures of Hanzo, how to make your writing WTF as well. Only $75!"

  • Not Sure (unregistered)

I am a Nigerian prince and I need some money to get some other money so you can get some money. Please send.

Too true. What's next in this series?
The Amy Poehler guide to Emmy success? The Plaxico Burress Guide to Sharpshooting?

Clue: Get good at something before deigning to teach others how to do it. However much you like storytelling, Remy, you're not good at it.

I strongly disagree with the criticism. I believe the story telling on this site is often awful, but the story telling in Remy's articles is consistently excellent. If all engineers could do the same, the world would be a Better Place.

  • Tobias (unregistered)

I don't know whether this is a good or a bad thing.

I love the concept of TheDailyWTF, but I looaathe the way many of the submissions feel like it's their mission to write a (shitty) creative writing story, where I have to dig through paragraphs of irrelevant terrible fiction to get to the WTF that I came for. I honestly don't care how you manage to make up nicknames for all your co-workers and put them in a made-up setting where everything is related to Narnia, or whatever else you painfully you though up. Keep It Simple Stupid.

So either it's great that people follow a workshop to improve their stories, OR that workshop will just encourage people to insert even more irrelevant BS into their stories.

    FTFY

What is the matter? I sent you all of my monthly income and I am yet to receive any return on my investment.

Yes, but a terrible programmer. Remy's comments explain what instead of why.

    Thirdified!
  • TimeLord (unregistered)

Fourth! That Remy's stories are the bestest!

    But.

    Who.What.Where.When.Why.AndHow. YMMV for fiction.

Pittsburgh narrows it down, I suppose. But when?

  • (cs)

    Remy stop fluffing yourself.
