I believe that captcha system is used by google. The little wheel chair if you click it will speak a series of characters to be typed in. Try signing up for a new gmail account to see what I mean.
Are you saying Google discriminates against the deafblind?
noooo... The spoken text is for the blind. The picture with the characters is for the deaf. Google has both, catering for people who are both deaf and blind....

IMHO, yes. It means that you are not a robot in the most important sense [though the success of the advertising industry would indicate that you are in the minority.

OK, as far as I recognize, the wheelchair needs to be clicked if someone is blind and can't read the captcha. And this leads to another WTF: How the hell a blind person can ever see the wheelchair image?? (OK, I know, it has to have some "alternative text" - but what the image is for?)

    Captcha: "ewww". Yeah.

Folks can be legally blind, and still see shapes, colors and stuff like that. Why bother yourself with such worries? If you are that worried, take some nylons and wrap them over your eyes, and surf the net. You'll find that the text to speech apps are worth gold then. And maybe, depending on how blind you are, you might understand why the wheelchair icon is there.

I'm not sure. I am a heterosexual female, and I kept failing the men portion. I almost always got the women version right. Maybe because what women like in men is more varied than what men like in women (visually anyhow). Or maybe I just find it difficult to assess the "hotness" of men young enough to be my sons...

The blind person in all probability won't ever even load the wheelchair image. The alternate text for it is probably more informative, though.

Hey, the captcha is actually working!

When Adams quit his job (was it at Pac Bell?) he lost touch with reality. Dilbert's about as real as Cathy or Family Circus now. [/quote]

Speaking as a woman (and a mother) I find both Cathy and Family Circus very believable (usually).

I thought of the same strip when I saw this article... but oddly enough, I remember Dilbert's last quote as "Stupid scenic descriptions." Did SRA change the line for some reason?

It's very common for visually impaired people to have taxicabs take them on their errands -- including, yes, the drive-up ATM. I think I read this in The Straight Dope...Cecil Adams is smarter than you are.

What is with all this CAPTCHA stuff? I don't get it. The captcha at the bottom of everyone's posts is unnecessarily redundant.

The text in Dilbert's last line is using a different font, so somebody changed it...

I vote that the real WTF is that the content doesn't display in the latest version of Firefox, only the introduction does. I had to actually open and use IE to view the content.

Captcha: kungfu - Guess that's what it takes to get the content to display in Firefox.

    Exactly that form! :D

(I don't know why Alex wanted to further anonymise my nick.)

Anyway -- the real WTF here is, the CAPTCHA didn't validate.

Don't forget that some people are color-bind; they can see the wheelchair and click on it of course, but maybe they cannot see the letters/numbers in the image.

Should I be glad I failed the men on that ultimate captcha site?

I tried three times with both genders(for science!) and succeeded only once on either gender. I'd say that is a pretty horrible captcha. (I'm a straight male, for the record, so statistically, if that test were to cater to any one particular group, I'd expect it to be mine.)

Furthermore, due to there being a finite(and quite small) number of pictures, it wouldn't surprise me if brute-forcing a captcha of that sort was quite possible(unless they ban your IP for answering wrongly).
