Comment must contain at least one alphanumeric character. Comment cannot contain "frist!". Comment must at least be mildly funny. Comment matches 2 out of 3 rules, but 4 are required. Last sentence is TRWTF.

  • (disco)

My frist job was a dummy requisition position.

  • (disco)

Comment must be least 10 characters. Comment contains the illegal sequence "frist". Body is too similar to what you recently posted. Post date must match "^(?:(?:(?:0?[13578]|1[02])(/|-|.)31)\1|(?:(?:0?[13-9]|1[0-2])(/|-|.)(?:29|30)\2))(?:(?:1[6-9]|[2-9]\d)?\d{2})$|^(?:0?2(/|-|.)29\3(?:(?:(?:1[6-9]|[2-9]\d)?(?:0[48]|[2468][048]|[13579][26])|(?:(?:16|[2468][048]|[3579][26])00))))$|^(?:(?:0?[1-9])|(?:1[0-2]))(/|-|.)(?:0?[1-9]|1\d|2[0-8])\4(?:(?:1[6-9]|[2-9]\d)?\d{2})$".

They are letting you know it is really "mathematics". At least they don't ask for your favourite colour!

Let me guess: run that expression and you get brainwiped as in Snow Crash ?

Well, no, because if you liked Math you might not need Intuit's products.

    sorry, your password must match:

Yeah, it's a headache when they won't let you abbreviate, isn't it? (Try the full discipline name: "Mathematics".)

So what on earth is wrong with typing "Mathematics"? Don't tell me: while mathematics may have been your least favourite subject, spelling was your least successful. Therefore you are probably too stupid to own a computer.

This reminds me, some time ago I had a discussion with a guy about a certain forum software that had custom fields on sign-up, and how you could add in regexps to validate them.

He thought it was acceptable to simply show the regexp to users and say 'this is enough explanation' because he loves regexps.

  • (disco) in reply to accalia

  • (disco) in reply to Zainab58

vecause that regexp is evil on a stick?

  • (disco)

The true WTF is that subjects should be a dropdown list with a primary key so they can be analysed properly. Writein is just asking for misspellings.

  • (disco) in reply to Arantor
    Arantor:

I had one of those. He thought it was better to use a regexp to validate dates rather than simply pass the text into a date parser. Because nobody would ever accidentally enter the 31st of the second month.

  • (disco) in reply to kupfernigk

or the 29th of feb on an odd numbered year...

  • (disco) in reply to accalia

    Or 10/31/2014 instead of 31/10/2014 (or vice-versa) ...

or the 29th of feb on an odd numbered year...

Or even the 29th of Feb on the ~¾ of years that aren't leap years in general?

  • (disco) in reply to Arantor

well three qurters and a bit actually...

  • (disco) in reply to accalia

Hence the ~ for 'approximately'

  • (disco) in reply to Arantor

Well, exactly. These are all reasons for testing with a date parser not a regexp. Or having separate fields for year, month and day and having the day field contextualised by the year + month combination. regexps have their places. But they arose in a very different computing paradigm. They should be locked in a room with xml to see what slouches out.

  • (disco)

Not allowing short answers for one's secret questions is reasonable (leaving aside for the moment the reasonableness of the whole secret question mechanism in the first place), because short answers will be easy for an attacker to guess.

Of course, by the same logic, having a question like "What was your least favourite subject at school?" is TRWTF, because the number of likely answers is quite small. I'd expect you could guess it for a random person in a handful of tries most of the time.

  • (disco) in reply to Scarlet_Manuka

Hint: almost everyone's hated subject is Math. When it's not Math, it's probably English. Then you still have one other guess you can tailor to the person before you get locked out.

Use the manufacturer's color, like "Imola Red"
