Turns out a simple laser pointer can distract a T-rex long enough to get away. This will all be in the next Jurassic Park movie.

Er... am I missing something with the projector? It is upside down (probably due to some overheating issue), there is a flip-gizmo, that should return the image to normal (good idea)... Then there is a laptop which is configured to flipped output, resulting in a flipped image? I think something is not right with that particular tale...

  • (cs)

Ooh... can I set something up that looks stupid, take a picture and claim I saw it somewhere else?

(c'mon, really, who's actually stupid enough to turn their projector upside down on a table AND smart enough to know how to flip their screen???)

The gizmo isn't hooked up; it's just being used to prop up the projector.

I was a bit baffled by the projector (other than: haha someone did a funny) until I read the comments and people seemed to get part way there in an explanation. Possibly... projector overheats, someone decideds to turn it upside down for better airfow out the bottom vents, and uses the upside-down gizmo... then gets a newer laptop with decent graphics drivers that allow you to flip the image anyway, so they unplug the new redundant gizmo, keeping it there cos it improves the airflow, or cos they're lazy. Not very amusing, but there ya go.

My guess is the person who turned the projector upside down was not the same as the one who flipped the laptop's screen.

The "VGA Flipper" is a bit of a WTF in and of itself.

Prety much every not-a-cheap-toy-for-home-use projector manufactured in at least the past 10+ years has the the ability to flip images both horizontally (for rear-projection aplications) and vertically (for ceiling-mounted applications) built in, as in not needing an external box or screwing with video card settings....

Including the NEC shown in the picture.

Most projectors (It's been long enough since I've seen that particular projector, I'll be general) either do airflow front-to-back or side-to-side so it's unlikely that overheating would be a reason for using the projector in the pictured state.

    Lincoln.

Maybe it was a memory test from the legal studies department to see who remembered contract law from their last semester. One of the requirements for holding a contract as binding is that any person who agrees to a contract understands it. Since there is no way you can understand something you can't read, that text is little more than a meaningless blurb of wishful thinking to scare people who don't know any better into complying.

The makers of that textbook must be hoping that their clients are stupid. I would hope that most law students know that you can't be bound by the conditions of a contract you can't read.

    meh:
projector overheats, someone decideds to turn it upside down for better airfow out the bottom vents
Unless the projector is on a Stupid Surface like carpet or leather, which it clearly isn't in the photo; or it's surrounded by papers and Other Stuff which cramps the airflow, overheating probably isn't the reason. Maybe it was done to 'stop people pressing the buttons on the top,' thereby switching inputs or switching it off?

As to the 'laser toy,' that frankly worries me. Good way to blind someone or otherwise stuff their eyesight IMHO, regardless of how 'low-powered' it is. OTOH … a good game to play late at night is to shine one of those on to a) the pavement ('sidewalk' for you Colonials) about three feet in front of a drunk, or b) the back of someone's coat, if their friends are walking a few paces back. Then switch it off if the 'victim' tries to investigate it. Hilarity typically ensues. ;)

Finally, the 'licence sticker outside' phenomenon has existed since at least the mid-1980s to my certain knowledge, although I thought it had died a death by now. As others have correctly stated, you can't enforce a contract which one of the parties hasn't read yet. How old did you say that textbook was, exactly? :D

The projector is easy to explain. A lot of projectors can only project horizontally or upwards, so if this one is on a shelf or ledge high up you have a choice of turning the projector itself upside down, or pointing it downward and getting a distorted image that requires keystone correction.

The inverter was probably an earlier attempt to solve the problem by someone who really misunderstood what was wrong.
