When questioned, the user of this laptop claimed that his cat had been playing with it...
    Was it a bobcat?

It's common knowledge that 1 in 10 cats are meth addicts.

gmail's inbox is supposed to refresh automatically. So if she needed to click the refresh button there had to be an issue with the setup. For example, gmail was defaulting to HTML mode due to a very slow connection or an outdated browser. Both of those are issues that John A was supposed to fight.

The laptop keyboard looks suspiciously like my laptop after my 2 year old son was done with it. He had flicked off about a third of the key caps.

Yep. Looks more like small child than cat to me.

I had the pleasure of introducing Mr. Kashmere to Mr. Refresh Button.

Did Mr. Kashmere have the pleasure of introducing you to Mr. Lotus Notes? I am pretty sure that's what he was using previously, because Lotus Notes refresh often works the way Mr. Kashmere was trying to refresh Gmail.

I had a young kitten do that same thing, I got to him before he pulled off more than two key caps.

I was able to find the tops and snap them back on. A few months later the machine was swapped out for a new one as part of an end of lease. The cat is 5 years old now and still loves to sit on my lap while I use the company laptop. He doesn't pull on the keys anymore, he has to have his paws on my hands, making it very hard to type.

With regards to the laptop, this is why you close the lid on it when not in use.

As a student I had a cat that often studied with me. On the desk, on my notes and books. If the cat noticed a moth or anything chasable, he would jump up and start running towards the object of interest... and slipping on my notes... scattering them all over the room. It was quite a sight. I think I prefer reorganising notes to finding key-tops.

My cat heard something "scratching around" in my laptop and decided to try to "dig it out". Fortunately, my laptop was closed; and the scratches on top are hardly visible.

After that, it isn't hard for me to imagine the key caps flying.

  • brillgill (unregistered)

I saw a key board like that while working tech support, although it belonged to a desk top and not a lap top. The user claimed that his parrot had done it. I think it was true because he also supplied me with a handful of keycaps that had been "beaked".

His Gmail inbox was not automatically refreshing. His solution? Shut down the entire computer, and turn it back on again.

I had the pleasure of introducing Mr. Kashmere to Mr. Refresh Button.

Not a WTF. For decades the "three R's of Microsoft troubleshooting" have been Reboot, Reinstall, Refund. Everyone has been thoroughly trained to Reboot whenever anything isn't just so. You will notice that Reload (AKA Refresh) isn't on that list. It's too modern. Remember: our cherished ignorant lusers can't ever be expected to learn anything new.

OK maybe a radically different ribbon interface in Office, but otherwise, even moving to something ever so slightly different like OpenOffice would throw most people into the insane bin. Don't even try it. The stupid people could never handle it.

My african grey parrot will make my keyboard look like that in about 10 minutes. I have gone through about 5 keyboards in the past 2 years (because not only does he take the keys off, he rips off the tabs on the back of the key, so they will no longer go in properly) So I always keep my eyes out for $5 keyboards.
