This whole situation is just plain ricockulous. Or should that be riRichardulous?

I am reminded of a Web forum I came across at random once, some years ago, where a group of people had engaged in an apparently quite serious discussion of "homobad worduality".

I don't remember what the forum was, or much of anything else about the discussion or the site, but that particular phrase has stuck with me ever since.

Given the correct spelling of "ridiculous", it's just as likely to be replaced with HorribleVinDieselMovieulous.

    Actually, that's redundant...

Never seen that term before, had to look it up. I realize now I shouldn't have done so at work ;)

some smart-alec software thought that BUTT was less offensive than ASS
This is the part I still find strange. Even if they'd put in the whole-word-only checks to make this work the way they intended without all the WTFs we've been laughing at, why would they want to replace one offensive word with another equally offensive word?
    Trevor:
Though to be politically correcty, it should be "The Cldonkeyic Mistake" So as not to offend anyone with the word 'butt'.
I could at least see what they were trying for there, however badly they mangled the implementation.
    anonymous coward:
For example: "in several instances eve-teasing has been followed by more violent buttaults such as rape and liquidate"

It took a thesaurus, but liquidate == murder. ......wtf

So they actually replaced the proper, legal term for it with a gangster slang synonym??? WTF? Are they trying to make it less offensive or more offensive? (That they didn't recognize the difference between noun and verb usage was minor in comparison.)

I was reading a discussion on a message board about golfers. I was quite amused to see references to "Zach BLEEP" and "Brian BLEEP". Obviously "Johnson" and "Gay" are tagged as naughty words. I look forward to the day that a Richard (Dick) Wang joins the PGA tour.

There's a tennis forum where when people goof up hitting the ball it gets called a misshoot or misstuff.

At least, their filter is not gone totally crazy. I just imagine an innocent sport report, where the game suddenly turns about one player serving the other by hitting his testicles with a tennis racket in mid-air.

One of those Advanced Dungeons and Dragons source books (from the days when TSR could not afford a full time editor) had lines like this:

Apparently, someone did not like the term "mage" that much.

What is bizarre, though, is the kind of site it appears on. Against better judgement (considering the domain name) I went to see the site anyway, in public. I caught only a glimpse, but what I saw was enough to give me shivers :S

Last time I checked "ass" was a synonym for equus asinus, an animal in the equine family.

Yes, and Dick is a nickname for Richard, a cock is a male chicken, and a pussy is a synonym for cat. You have a problem with homophones?

    yes, he's homophonic

reminds me of how the Forums of the game Runescape used to censor the word "sextant". and yes, it was mentioned often, since there's a minigame requiring you to use a sextant to find buried treasure.

oh yeah, then there was the person who used a word-processing program to change the names on the wedding vows the church used...first, "Will" got married, then "Richard"...resulting in the wedding vows saying "Richard you take this man..."
