On the brighter side, there are RDP clients available for a variety of platforms, and versions of Windows all the way back to 3.1. So they don't have to worry about the nightmare of browser version compatibility!

BTW, RDP is a great way to serve up enterprise applications to internal networks. Doesn't matter how much the boss want to see it in a web browser, many of the applications have incredibly rich UIs that could never be translated in to a "web" interface.

But making such a server available publicly on the internet... WTF!

There is none. Proof by reductio ad absurdum: 1.Assume there is one application that cannot be translated to a "web" interface. 2.Put it in a server. 3.Make a remote desktop client that connects to it using HTML5 canvas + websockets. 4.It now is a web application. ∎

And the winner for the worst restaurant web page of all time goes to a little pizza place in pittsburgh. Good pizza if I remember correctly(I moved a while ago).

    www.angelfire.com/pa2/pindan/franks.htm

whenever I look at this site I always hear the sound track from Monty Python and the Holy Grail opening credits after the llamas take over.

This might not count though since they have recently replaced this site with something far less ghastly at http://www.frankspizzaandchicken.com/

Sure the new site looks nice, but if I want to actually see the menu, the new site sux. I can actually see the whole menu on the old site, and the scroll bar shows me how much I've seen/not seen. With the new site's (beautiful, but so what) interface, it's very hard to know if I've looked over everything -- a process which now requires lots of clicks. If I already know exactly what I want, it's easy to get to, but for discoverability the new site ranks pretty low. Just sayin'.

What is it with these Southwestern PA terrible restaurant websites?

Frank's old site looks like it was written in Notepad (or vi for those Linux users) back in 1992... Love the animated gifs everywhere (not!).

Actually, a comment near the top of the page states: "This page originally created by dan hosek 2004", which somehow makes it even more hilarious. That Dan Hosek is a true web 2.0 visionary.

Don't worry, they'll need to set up a new account at some point, or else no one will be able to access their High-Tech State-of-the-Art Super-Advanced online ordering system with the cross-eyed cartoon chick. They probably paid a good amount for that system, so I don't think they'll just shut it down permanently. I guess the real question is, will they now pay a REAL developer (i.e. not Hinser Data) another boatload to write a web front-end which will read from those Foxpro files.

I can't believe they left an open account to a Windows machine accessible to the entire internet via RDP just so people could log in and order food!

This should obviously have been done with SSH and Linux.

Then expert food orderers and the visual impaired could use the CLI interface, while casual users could just use X forwarding.
