The lack of the number 0 in latin means that it is not possible to transmit Roman Numerals in binary.

Why not? What's one thing got to do with another?

The lack of a latin number for 0 is a pain in the ass, and possibly facilitated the fall of the empire (along with the idiocy of the rest of the numeric system, and barbarians, corruption, etc.), but not in this particular case.

Or perhaps you meant you couldn't have binary numbers without the zero. But binary at the core just means "two different values". Voltage differences used to represent 0 electrically are rarely 0, due to a number of very interesting reasons. Instead of 0 and 1, use I and V.

Looks like someone isn't filling in the fields in their default Alert dialog. snicker It's kind of the RAD equivalent of the approximately 5,580,000 Web pages called "new document 1" and the many more called "untitled document", "new page", and so on.

I've wondered for a long time whether people actually look at their own websites. After a while reading DailyWTF, I'm wondering if they look at their own apps, either.

Oh, and dunno about shockwave, but flash is certainly a problem. 95% of Firefox crashes/hangs are associated with the flash player in my experience.

The lack of the number 0 in latin means that it is not possible to transmit Roman Numerals in binary.

Not to actually get serious for a moment, but ... What do you mean? That's like saying that the lack of a digit "2" in binary means that it's not possible to transmit decimal numbers in binary.

"Binary" and "Roman numerals" are two different ways of displaying numbers. One could easily write functions to translate between the two, just as one writes functions to translate between binary and decimal.

Roman numerals are based on adding up the values of each of the tokens. (The idea of subtracting when a lower-valued token comes before a higher-valued one is a late invention.) Thus the Roman numeral represenation of zero is the empty string. How many fingers am I holding up? None? That's zero.

    Roman Binary
    ----- ------
    "I" 0001
    "V" 0101
    "X" 1010
    "IV" 0100
    "" 0000

    etc

  • IV (unregistered)

I've already seen it come up once, so I'll try to head it off (not that anyone will read this before posting). Use of XL for 40 (ten less than 50) actually is not the original use of roman numerals. Back during the Roman Empire, they did indeed write out XXXX. The idea for making representations shorter by using basic arithmetic did not come about for another 1000 years or so. Therefore XXXX is a perfectly calid representation of 40 as long as you are using an out of date standard. And if there is anything computer scientists should know, it is how to use an older standard.

TRWTF is why doesn't Apple market their than one button options better? The Mighty Mouse has the option to turn on a context-click (or for those who pander only to 90% of the population, right-click). I really like my MacBook's two finger context-click and scroll. My MM's scroll ball is great too and, with regular cleaning, still works unlike my IBM mouse's scroll wheel (up).

More on topic, haven't we seen the referenced dialog before?

New Mac mice have 0, 1, 2, or 4 buttons, depending on how you count them.

They basically have a touch pad where the buttons on a normal mouse go. They have one "lever" button, much like the older Apple mice. That is to say, you press down on the body, and the entire body clicks. When you do this, the mouse figures out what you want to press by the configuration of your fingers on the touch pad. It also has a neat little scroll ball, and some weird buttons on the side (that everybody turns off).

They're nice mice, but not suitable for gaming. I like both of mine.

Or maybe, to try and get the game to work under Cedega he tried to apply a crack to get it working? You know, one of those people who paid money for a game and just wants to play it, but is prevented from doing so by some arbitrarily stupid copy protection system that only ever seems to really harm people who purchase the game legitimately? Maybe?

But no, I have a better idea...let's assume the worst, act like an arrogant piece of shit and insult someone about whom you know nothing, and then put in a nice little plug for your little mod and generate some ad-views! Brother Laz, we salute you, you truly are a modern-day hero.
