Looks like @faoileag frist-liked before me.

WTFCrash is an awesome name for an error.

TRWTF is that neither Petrea M. nor the crack editorial team (!) are capable of understanding "Time to write some flavor text" in the context of "Players only have 15 seconds to take their turns" as "15 seconds is enough time to write some flavor text".

  • (disco)

“WTF” comes from WebKit’s Web Template Framework. I’m pretty sure it was chosen on purpose...

2.58KB/s? Are we back in the age of dialup and 33.6K modems? I'd say there's the WTF...

(By contrast, if I get good signal strength, my mobile phone gets somewhere near 6-8MB/s - I don't have a firm figure, but a 40MB download takes five or six seconds.)

And yes, I know about ADSL being, well, asymmetrical, but with modern upload rates being at least 1Mb/s, I'd expect a rate over 100KB/s.

Most Hearthstone cards have amusing flavour text when viewed in the Collection. Nozdormu's flavour text is a reference to the card's ability, which is to drastically reduce the time each player has to take their turn from 90 seconds to 15 seconds. The joke is that there wasn't time to write any flavour text.

  • (disco) in reply to Jonathan_Gover

It's not just a reference to his card's ability. Nozdormu, in the lore of Warcraft, is the Dragon Aspect of Time. An almighty creature with total control over the timelines, and empowered to do so by one of the Creators of the universe. So it's not really a WTF.

  • (disco)

Of course that's a weak password, it's just been posted to a website for all to see.....

  • (disco) in reply to Steve_The_Cynic

I've just moved house and that's about what I currently get over ADSL. My previous house had 160Mb/s FTTC

I've just signed up for an FTTP service they've just started digging up the village for. 1 Gigabit symmetrical, it's going to be great.

Not being familiar with US post codes, I typed "zip code 22209" into Google... all the early results are for Arlington, Virginia as claimed... but Google's insert in the top right for "this is the thing we think you're searching for" was a map for Pedosy, Vinnyts'ka oblast, Ukraine, 22209. Close, Google... close.

I don't know about other countries, but here in Belgium there are several towns with the same name but different postal codes, e.g. Mariakerke (one has postal code 9030, another has postal code 8400; there's about 65km between them)

    No, you really weren't.

Unless you count flaming Discourse, trying to get the Discourse Devs to fix bugs, building threads topics to stress the system, talking about a few non-Discourse WTFs, raiding meta.discourse, raiding another Discourse install to show them the error of their ways (Hey @DaveZych!), ranting about how CDCK prioritized worthless and less than worthless UI changes over actual bug fixes, ranting about UI changes that made things worse, ...

Very common in the US: as an example, Springfield is a town name that is in most states at least once. Within 100 miles of my house, there are at least 3 Springfields, 4 Washington Townships, 2 Allentowns, and 3 Hamilton Townships.

Nah, I've seen it do that too, rarely. Put in a US zip code and it will offer you something wildly off the wall like a suburb of Paris (the one in France, not the one in Texas.)

Springfield isn't as common as Fairview, but more prevalent than Glendale which I thought would take the prize. But the real record-holder is Union; 128 post offices by that name, excluding variants.

Apple loves creating WTFs. Back in the day, Shark (RIP) had a mode where app profiling data was stored in a circular buffer, so that you'd start it and leave it running until you would observe a slowdown, after which you would stop collection and analyze the window thus frozen. Particularly useful for games. It was called the Windowed Time Facility.

And for Belgium that is already a lot. A little more and you have left the country.

Regarding addresses, why ask for the city & state if it can be inferred from the zip code? I'm in the UK, here a well designed site will ask for house number and postcode, and let you select your correctly formatted and spelled address from a list - and importantly allow free text entry if it's not in the database.

  • (disco) in reply to TheFury
    TheFury:

    Habit.

In college, I lived in the dorms for one year. The college had its own zip code, and each room had a unique zip+4. The zip+4 was, alone, a sufficient address. (I partially tested it. May have forgotten to finish. Mail addressed to "Frost Cat, X Dorm 123, 12345-123" reached me. The dorm name and room number should have been unnecessary, but I can't remember if I ever tried skipping 'em. And yeah, I was in the one dorm where your room number was your +4.)

  • (disco) in reply to FrostCat

Also, these tests proved to me that if you have the right zip code, the sorters don't actually care about the city, state. This was in Potsdam, NY, and I tried sending things addressed to Potsdam(n) and to Madstop and they all went through.

  • (disco)

My guess as to why places still ask for city/state is redundancy: you can't make a (really easy; even I have had trouble on many occasions remembering which of three or four zips I have lived in around the same location is the one I'm using now) typo to your zip code and have it come out very possibly undeliverable.

They could add a confirmation page that says "here's what we think your city/state is", but you know 90% of people would click "confirm" without actually looking.

The distance was by road, not as the crows fly, so it's not that much. I think the longest distance you can travel between two towns (without making detours) must be about 300km.

  • (disco) in reply to abarker

I haven't thought about it much. Not having a quick reply feature in discourse is definitely a huge minus...
