See now that's weird. It would seem to me more likely to maintain productivity if people knew they were being monitored. Unless you're more interested in catching people doing something wrong than in keeping them from doing it.

Why didn't the trouble tickets drop immediately? If there was a bit of lag between him being fired and the number of tickets going down, that implies that either he wasn't the only one or that someone else was doing things under his login.

When using a computer is part of your job, you should expect to be lightly derided for not being marginally competent at doing so. Not double-checking the URL is a complete n00b mistake. If you or your users don't have thick enough skin to take a jab because you didn't even do BASIC trouble-shooting before calling the helpdesk, you need to get over yourself.

As an analogy, if you got connected to someone that you didn't expect (or no one at all) when using the phone, would you instantly call the help desk, or would you check the number that you dialed? Same thing happening here. Someone who is a complete n00b and can barely use the "phone".

Your ex-bf got 2 kg worth of paper. 2kg/.00181436kg = 1,102.31707 so about 2.2 reams of paper. That is a lot of porn.

TRWTF is that here in the US, you can't make a recording of say, your frustrating tech support call, because making audio recordings of people without their consent is illegal, even if it is business related, so as a consumer, you have no evidence to refute Verizon when they told you data access was .1¢/MB, and it turns out to be $.1/MB.

Whereas, on the other hand, for some reason it is perfectly legal to log everything someone does on a company computer without giving them any knowledge that you are doing it, and keep those logs in perpetuity.

The legality of taping conversations falls under State jurisdiction so i'm not sure what you mean by 'here in the US'

For the most part, if it’s in a public space you’re free to tape away. A lot of states (and the feds) have a ‘one party’ consistent law. That basically says if one party (including yourself) consents, you can tape the conversation. So in your example, assuming you live in a one party consistent state, you could have taped away.

Of course that all get complicated when you're calling in between states and what not. But there is no general rule.

Actually, when they give you that "this call may be monitored or recorded" bit at the beginning, that gives you permission to record the call, as well. I can't find it right now but I saw a Slashdot comment where the person had hit record on a phone call to some tech support line. He got fed up with the person he was talking to and got transferred to the supervisor, who chewed him out. He mentions how he's been recording this call and will post it to his blog, gets chewed out again, supervisor threatens to sue for illegal recording. He then plays the first part of the call where the recording told him "this call may be monitored or recorded". Supervisor calms down, problem gets solved.

The flip side to all parties having to agree is that you get to record them, too.

IANAL, but the voice prompt usually says that the call may be monitored or recorded. It usually doesn't say "we may monitor or record the call". I would interpret this as an explicit consent to recording. If one side may record the call, this means both sides consented to that, and this means you too may record the call.
